Trong xã hội hiện nay, chúng ta đề cao tinh thần nhập thế, đem đạo vào đời. Vậy làm thế nào để Phật sự mãi thăng tiến, tỏa sáng, ma sự ngày càng tiêu trừ. Vọng niệm/vọng tưởng (papañca) – tiến trình nhận thức làm tâm ô nhiễm và phương pháp diệt trừ trong Kinh Mật Hoàn sẽ giúp chúng ta làm rõ vấn đề này.
KHAI NIỆM Papañca
Papañca được xuất hiện với nhiều hình thức khác nhau, nếu xét theo thực nghĩa, chúng không có nghĩa là vọng tưởng, vọng niệm như những chú thích đã nêu, mà có nghĩa là chướng ngại, trễ nải và lầm lạc, chứ không phải dựa trên vọng và chơn. Nhưng trong “Kinh Mật Hoàn” số 18 thuộc Trung Bộ Kinh, nó đứng cùng một nhóm từ “papañcasaññāsankhā”, vậy nó có nghĩa thế nào?
“Papañcasaññāsankhā” bằng với “papañca” kết hợp với “saññā” và “sankhā”. Trong đó, “papañca” có nghĩa như vừa nêu trên; “saññā” có nghĩa là tưởng, nó nằm trong năm tiến trình của tưởng uẩn, được gọi là các hiểu biết, tri giác và được xem là trở ngại sự trong sáng của tâm; “sankhā” có nghĩa là cái gọi là hay được xem là. Vậy “papañcasaññāsankhā” trong Kinh Mật Hoàn có nghĩa là cái được xem là sự trở ngại về sự tiến hóa của tinh thần (tâm linh) hay nói khác hơn, nó được xem là vọng tưởng hay vọng niệm. Vậy tiến trình nhận thức làm ô nhiễm tâm của vọng tưởng/vọng niệm như thế nào và phương pháp đoạn trừ của nó ra sao mà nó lại tác động lớn đến đời sống tu tập của một người?
Trước khi tìm hiểu vấn đề này, chúng ta cùng tìm hiểu tùy miên là gì và vì sao Đức Phật lại nói đoạn tận tùy miên trước. Tùy miên là tên gọi khác của phiền não, là nguyên nhân cảm sinh ra thế giới mê và vọng, là gốc của sự tái sinh. Theo Kinh Mật Hoàn, nó được chia làm sáu loại: Tham, sân, kiến, nghi, mạn, vô minh tùy miên và nó chỉ xuất hiện khi có điều kiện tác động lên nó: “Này Tỳ-kheo, do bất cứ nhân duyên gì, một số hý luận vọng tưởng (papañcasaññāsankhā) ám ảnh một người. Nếu ở đây không có gì đáng tùy hỷ, đáng đón mừng, đáng chấp thủ, thời như vậy là sự đoạn tận tham tùy miên… sân tùy miên… kiến tùy miên… nghi tùy miên… mạn tùy miên… sở hữu tham tùy miên… vô minh tùy miên, sự đoạn tận chấp trượng, chấp kiếm, đấu tranh, tránh tranh, luận tranh, kháng tranh, ly gián ngữ, vọng ngữ. Chính ở đây, những ác, bất thiện pháp này đều được tiêu diệt, không còn dư tàn” [1].
TIẾN TRÌNH CỦA VỌNG TƯỞNG
Vậy tiến trình vận hành của papañca là quá trình do bất cứ duyên gì (tức sáu căn tiếp xúc với sáu trần), chúng ta tùy hỷ, chào đón, chấp thủ nó thì hý luận vọng tưởng, nó sẽ sanh khởi, sáu loại tùy miên, chấp trượng, đấu tranh, kháng tranh, vọng ngữ, các pháp thiện hay ác cũng theo đây sẽ sanh khởi, và làm ám ảnh một người. Ví dụ như mắt thấy sắc vừa ý thì tham khởi lên (tham tùy miên), tai nghe tiếng không vừa ý thì sân khởi lên (sân tùy miên)… và các pháp thiện hay ác, nó chỉ xuất hiện khi có điều kiện tác động, nó mới sanh khởi. Khi nó chưa sanh khởi hay không có điều kiện tác động, nó chỉ là ngủ ngầm hay tùy miên ngủ ngầm. Ngược lại, khi căn gặp trần, chúng ta không quan tâm, không chào đón, không bị nó chi phối thì tất cả những phiền trược, rối rắm phức tạp của cuộc sống sẽ chấm dứt và đây cũng là cách điều phục papañca của Đức Phật.
Do các Tỳ-kheo không hiểu ý của Đức Phật nên đã tìm đến Tôn giả Mahākaccāna để hỏi. Tôn giả giải thích thêm: “Chư Hiền, do nhân con mắt và các sắc pháp, nhãn thức khởi lên. Sự gặp gỡ của ba pháp này là xúc. Do duyên xúc nên có các cảm thọ. Những gì có cảm thọ thời có tưởng. Những gì có tưởng thời có suy tầm. Những gì có suy tầm thời có hý luận. Do hý luận ấy làm nhơn, một số hý luận vọng tưởng ám ảnh một người, đối với các pháp do ý thức nhận thức, quá khứ, tương lai và hiện tại” [2].
Tai, mũi, lưỡi, thân, ý lộ trình cũng tương tự như vậy. Đây là tiến trình sáu căn tiếp xúc với sáu trần làm cho một người bị vọng tưởng bởi quá khứ, hiện tại, vị lai. Hay nói một cách dễ hiểu, một vấn đề muốn sanh khởi phải hội tụ ba yếu tố: Mắt, có đối tượng để nhìn thấy và có nhãn thức (cái biết của con mắt đối với đối tượng). Ba yếu tố này hợp lại mới có xúc (cảm xúc), có xúc mới có thọ (vừa lòng, khổ hay vui), do có thọ nên tưởng mới có mặt, do có tưởng nên mới có suy tầm, từ suy tầm mới sanh khởi hý luận vọng tưởng và đây là sự liên tục về mối tương quan của papañca trong quá khứ, hiện tại và vị lai. Vậy có thể kết luận: Tất cả những thứ ấy, chúng cũng đồng khởi lên và tồn tại song hành, hoặc chúng xuất hiện sau nhưng trong khoảng sát na mà thôi và hý luận vọng tưởng có từ trong tâm của mỗi người chứ không phải nói ra mới có hý luận vọng tưởng. Vì khi tưởng khởi tức những niệm giải mới xuất hiện. Cũng vậy, nếu ba yếu tố ấy không gặp nhau thì chúng chỉ là chúng, chứ không phải là vọng tưởng. Ví dụ, ba đường thẳng phải giao nhau tại một điểm bất kỳ nào đó thì chúng mới cắt nhau, nếu không giao nhau thì chúng chỉ là ba đường thẳng riêng biệt.
Vọng tưởng thật ra chỉ là phản ánh thật tướng. Vì không có thật nên gọi là vọng và do phân biệt sai lầm mà có sự chấp giữ các tướng ở thế gian, nên được gọi là tưởng. Vì vậy, bản chất của nó chỉ là những khái niệm gợi ý, cái hướng về hay một phần của sự thật dưới góc nhìn chủ quan của mỗi người lưu trữ nó. Ví dụ, lần thứ nhất, người A gặp người B bàn luận một vấn đề gì đó, có một số điểm chưa đồng ý. Lần thứ hai, chưa biết cuộc bàn luận như thế nào và đi về đâu nhưng trong suy nghĩ người A đã ghi nhớ những nhận thức hay cái biết trong cuộc gặp lần trước, góp phần khiến cuộc bàn luận trở nên không thuận lợi.
Trong một ngày, chúng ta có vô số những loại tưởng như vậy, cứ ứng xử và sống trong thế giới của tưởng mang tính chủ quan đó. Vì vậy, vọng tưởng trong trường hợp ngài Mahākaccāna nói đó là niệm khởi khi đủ các duyên để hình thành, tức vọng niệm. Từ một niệm khởi bởi sự tương tác trên, nó hình thành nên những quan điểm, khái niệm và có mối liên hệ mật thiết đến tùy miên. Ví như, yêu thích – tham tùy miên khởi lên, ghét – sân tùy miên khởi lên…
Tóm lại, vọng tưởng là cái gì? Bất cứ cái gì khởi lên làm mất sự sáng suốt, thanh tịnh của tâm, cái đó gọi là “papañcasaññāsankhā” (vọng tưởng/vọng niệm). Vì khi một niệm khởi lên, nếu chúng ta không nhận ra lập tức nó sẽ cuốn chúng ta vào dòng chảy của thị phi, dẫn đến đánh mất sự thanh tịnh và trong sáng, mọi phiền não phức tạp (tham, sân, si… vô minh tùy miên) sẽ tham gia vào trong cuộc sống của chính mình.
TIÊU TRỪ VỌNG TƯỞNG
Vậy muốn an lạc, thanh tịnh, chúng ta phải làm thế nào? Vì sao mà vọng tưởng lại khó điều phục như vậy? Phương pháp đoạn trừ nó ra sao? Sau đây là một số phương pháp để đoạn trừ:
Thứ nhất, chúng ta phải có đời sống an lạc, tỉnh giác, tinh cần và chánh niệm. Trong Kinh Pháp Cú, kệ số 1 và 2, Đức Phật dạy: “Ý dẫn đầu các pháp/ ý làm chủ, ý tạo” [3]. Vì thế, việc làm chủ ý niệm là vô cùng quan trọng, vì khi mọi ý niệm khởi lên do tương tác giữa các yếu tố của giác quan với đối tượng, cái biết, cũng như sau đó là xúc, thọ thì tưởng vừa sanh khởi. Chúng ta nhận ra bản chất của nó, không nuôi dưỡng và chạy theo, nó sẽ không có đủ duyên hoặc cơ hội để hiện khởi và chi phối chúng ta. Có nhiều cách để giữ chánh niệm như thực tập thiền Chỉ – Quán, thiền Minh Sát hay niệm Phật… tùy theo trình độ và căn cơ của mỗi người. Tuy nhiên, trước khi thực tập những cái lớn, chúng ta nên bắt đầu làm chủ ý niệm từ những oai nghi nhỏ nhất, ý tứ trách nhiệm, khi làm biết ta đang làm, khi nói biết ta đang nói… để bổ trợ cho lộ trình trên.
Thứ hai, do vì tướng vọng tưởng là không thật, chỉ nương vào duyên mới sanh khởi và rất vi tế nên rất khó đoạn trừ. Trong Kim Cang Giảng Giải của Hòa thượng Thanh Từ cho rằng: “Tướng chúng sanh là tướng thấy tất cả loài là có thật” [4]. Thế nên, nếu là phàm phu khi mắt thấy đất liền khởi tưởng cứng, thấy lửa liền khởi tưởng nóng; tai nghe nói me liền khởi tưởng chua… nhưng không biết tất cả những thứ ấy do chấp thủ tướng mà sinh khởi. Vì vậy, muốn đoạn trừ, chúng ta cần phải loại bỏ những tạp khí (tham, sân, si… ) ô nhiễm trong tâm; một môi trường trong sạch để thực hành và phải có một giáo dục thiền môn vì khi bất thiện pháp yếu đi thì thiện pháp sẽ tăng dần. Tất cả đều do huân tập chấp thủ mà có, nên khi không huân tập nữa, nó sẽ tự biến mất. Vì thế, phép quán tất cả pháp đều vô thường, khổ, vô ngã là phương pháp hữu hiệu để loại trừ chúng và chuyển hóa khổ đau.
Thứ ba, chúng ta đoạn trừ bằng cách quán nhân quả. Trong Kinh Tập, Đức Phật dạy rằng:
“Bần tiện không vì sanh,
Phạm chí không vì sanh,
Do hành, thành bần tiện,
Do hành, thành phạm chí” [5].
Trong Kinh Madhura, một lần nữa Tôn giả Mahākaccāna khẳng định ý nghĩa của giai cấp: Phục vụ người khác theo yêu cầu, chẳng qua chỉ là quyền lực kinh tế; không liên hệ tới giai cấp xã hội. [6].
Điều này chứng tỏ: Bất cứ cái gì mình gieo vào trong tâm, nó chắc chắn sẽ có sự trả giá và khi có xúc – thọ tức có cái sanh ra khổ đau. Nó phụ thuộc vào những nhân quả chúng ta gây tạo chứ không liên quan đến giai cấp trong xã hội. Vì vậy, việc điều phục cảm xúc bằng phương pháp quán nhân quả khá cần thiết. Nó giúp chúng ta dừng lại mọi ý niệm bất thiện. Nếu lúc ngồi thiền vọng tưởng sanh khởi nhiều, chúng ta nên nhận diện nó và đặt tâm trên tướng sanh diệt để lấy lại năng lượng. Nếu vẫn không điều phục được nó, ta nên dừng lại các tưởng ở chỗ biết. Vì khi một niệm khởi lên, chúng ta biết nó đang khởi, thì vọng tưởng lập tức sẽ dừng.
Nói chung, tất cả phương pháp trên cuối cùng vẫn gặp nhau ở một điểm là phải có chánh định. Để có định, trước tiên chúng ta cần phải giữ giới, vì giới là hàng rào bảo vệ và nhổ sạch cỏ dại trong tâm. Hay nói cách khác, giới là giá trị đạo đức. Nó là nhân ban đầu để chuyển hóa bùn thành sen thơm. Bởi do giới sẽ sanh định và do định sẽ sanh tuệ. Có trí tuệ, chúng ta sẽ có đủ nhận thức (chánh kiến) để nhìn rõ tướng của vọng tưởng và biết mình đang làm gì, ở đâu, hỷ lạc sẽ đến và đau khổ sẽ đoạn trừ. Vì khi có nhận thức đúng sẽ dẫn đến hành động đúng; khi nó đã thuần thì thiện và ác cũng sẽ không còn, vọng tưởng cũng không nương vào đâu mà sanh khởi. Bởi bản chất của vọng tưởng là luôn có đối tượng hướng đến, phụ thuộc vào duyên sinh và không thể tồn tại khi nó ở một mình, vì “phàm hễ có tướng đều là hư vọng” [7].
Muốn diệt được vọng tưởng, ta phải hiểu vọng tưởng là gì? Ta biết tu thiền là diệt trừ bản ngã, không chấp cái ta. Nếu nói người cầm gươm để diệt trừ bản ngã thì người cầm gươm chính là ngã, bởi khi ta diệt vọng tưởng thì ta chính là vọng tưởng, lấy vọng tưởng để diệt vọng tưởng thì không bao giờ hết. Lục tổ Huệ Năng có dạy:
“Nào dè tánh mình vốn tự thanh tịnh,
Nào dè tánh mình vốn chẳng sanh diệt,
Nào dè tánh mình vốn tự đầy đủ,
Nào dè tánh mình vốn chẳng lay động” [8].
Vốn dĩ, trong tự tánh giác của mỗi người hằng thanh khiết, không bị nhiễm ô nhưng vì do vô minh, vọng tưởng đảo điên… nên chấp vọng cho là chơn, chấp giả cho là thật. Vì vậy, diệt mà không diệt thì đó mới là diệt vọng tưởng. Khi đã diệt được vọng tưởng đồng nghĩa với tạp khí diệt và đau khổ sẽ chấm dứt, an lạc và Niết bàn cũng ở tại nhân gian, giống như từ sình lầy hôi tanh nay đã trở thành phù sa màu mỡ và hãy luôn nhớ rằng: Sự thành công luôn bắt đầu từ sự trả giá.
