Phật giáo là một trong những tôn giáo đi đầu trong việc giải phóng phụ nữ khỏi sự bất bình đẳng. Phật giáo ra đời đã đem lại một cuộc cách mạng cho nữ giới, không những cho phép nữ giới xuất gia mà còn làm thay đổi cả một hệ thống tư tưởng trọng nam khinh nữ, xem phụ nữ như một món đồ trang sức, không có địa vị trong gia đình. Đức Phật đã trả lại cho phụ nữ nhân phẩm và vị trí của họ trong xã hội. Đức Phật đã xác nhận nữ giới cũng ngang bằng với nam giới về mặt tu chứng. Tăng đoàn thời Đức Phật đã chứng minh nhận định ấy bởi họ đã có những bậc Thánh Ni xuất chúng, chứng được quả vị A-la-hán, hoàn toàn giải thoát khỏi các lậu hoặc.

Nói về người nữ có ảnh hưởng lớn thời Đức Phật không thể không kể đến Mahāpajāpati Gotamī, bà được cho là vị Tỳ-kheo ni đầu tiên xuất gia dưới thời Đức Phật và là người lãnh đạo Ni đoàn. Cơ sở của những nhận định trên dựa vào kinh Tăng Chi, phẩm Gotamī trong tạng Pāli, kinh Cù Đàm Di thuộc Trung A-hàm, số 180 và Luật tạng Nam truyền (Cullavagga). Tuy nhiên, cuộc đời xuất gia của bà cũng còn gây nhiều tranh cãi trong giới học thuật và cho đến ngày nay vẫn còn đang được nghiên cứu. Gần đây, có những phát hiện mới của những học giả cho rằng bà không phải là vị Tỳ-kheo ni đầu tiên xuất hiện thời Đức Phật cũng như đã có những vị Tỳ-kheo ni xuất hiện trước bà. Nhưng vấn đề thọ giới của bà, bà có thọ giới Sa di ni không? Ai là người truyền giới cho bà? Người viết chưa thấy các vị học giả nói đến. Trên cơ sở những nghiên cứu của những học giả đi trước và sự nghiên cứu thêm về Luật tạng cũng như bài kinh Đại Ái Đạo Tỳ-kheo ni của Hán tạng, tác giả hy vọng làm sáng tỏ vấn đề này với mục đích mong muốn đóng góp cho nền nghiên cứu thêm một vài dữ liệu về Thánh Ni Gotamī, làm phong phú thêm cho nguồn nghiên cứu về bà cũng như đóng góp một chút ý kiến cho công cuộc phục hưng giáo đoàn Tỳ-kheo ni tại các quốc gia theo truyền thống nguyên thủy.

Phật giáo ra đời trong khung cảnh văn hóa Ấn Độ, kế thừa những khái niệm của văn hóa Ấn Độ đương thời. Song, điểm khác biệt là Phật giáo không chấp nhận nền tảng phân biệt giai cấp của Ấn giáo và sự trọng nam khinh nữ của người Ấn. Đức Phật khẳng định rằng, tất cả chúng sanh đều có cùng một bản thể, đều có chung một Phật tánh, tính giác ngộ như nhau không phân biệt nam hay nữ.

QUAN NIỆM CỦA PHẬT GIÁO VỀ NGƯỜI NỮ 

Phật giáo ra đời trong khung cảnh văn hóa Ấn Độ, kế thừa những khái niệm của văn hóa Ấn Độ đương thời. Song, điểm khác biệt là Phật giáo không chấp nhận nền tảng phân biệt giai cấp của Ấn giáo và sự trọng nam khinh nữ của người Ấn. Đức Phật khẳng định rằng, tất cả chúng sanh đều có cùng một bản thể, đều có chung một Phật tánh, tính giác ngộ như nhau không phân biệt nam hay nữ. Mặc dù vậy, Đức Phật vẫn chỉ ra một số đặc tính khác biệt về xã hội và tâm sinh lý của người nam và người nữ, tuy đề cao tinh thần bình đẳng giới nhưng bổn phận quan trọng của người nữ vẫn là chăm sóc gia đình và chồng con. Để thay đổi một định kiến đã ăn sâu lâu dài trong xã hội Ấn Độ là một điều nan giải, cần một thời gian nhất định. Đức Phật đã khéo léo từ từ thay đổi định kiến đó bằng những phương tiện giáo hóa của mình. Ban đầu, Ngài thay đổi quan niệm của tầng lớp vua chúa, khi vua Pasenadi muộn phiền vì nghe tin báo Hoàng hậu hạ sinh Công chúa, Đức Phật đã khuyên:

“Này nhân chủ, ở đời

Có một số thiếu nữ

Có thể tốt đẹp hơn

So sánh với con trai

Có trí tuệ giới đức

Khiến nhạc mẫu thán phục

Rồi sinh được con trai

Là anh hùng quốc chủ

Người con trai như vậy

Của người vợ hiền đức

Thật xứng đáng là Đạo sư

Giáo giới cho toàn quốc” [1].

Dần dần Đức Phật đề cao vai trò của người nữ và sự bình đẳng giữa nam và nữ, giữa vợ với chồng. Đức Phật dạy con cái phải hiếu thuận với cha mẹ, cung kính cha mẹ như Phạm Thiên, cúng dường cha mẹ được quả báo lớn: “Có hai pháp dành cho người phàm phu, được công đức lớn, thành quả báo lớn, được vị cam lồ, đến chỗ vô vi. Thế nào là hai pháp? Là cúng dường cha mẹ” [2]. Đối với người chồng, Đức Phật dạy về trách nhiệm với người vợ của mình: “Người chồng nên lấy năm điều mà yêu thương cấp dưỡng vợ, năm điều đó là gì? Một là yêu thương vợ, hai là không khinh rẻ, ba là sắm các thứ chuỗi ngọc, đồ trang điểm, bốn là ở trong nhà để vợ được tự do, năm là xem vợ như chính mình”  [3]. Đối với người vợ, Đức Phật cũng dạy: “Phải thương yêu, kính trọng, cung phụng, nhớ nghĩ đến chồng, trông nom các công việc, khéo tiếp đãi bà con… khéo léo kính trọng chồng” [4]. Hành động được cho là đóng góp quan trọng và có ý nghĩa cách mạng của Đức Phật đối với người nữ là cho phép họ được gia nhập Tăng đoàn. Đó là bước tiến lớn lao để công nhận hoàn toàn vị thế của người nữ trong xã hội. Đức Phật khẳng định, người nữ cũng có thể giác ngộ và chứng đắc như người nam, minh chứng cụ thể là có những vị Thánh Ni đã đắc đạo và chứng được những quả vị như các vị Thánh Tăng trong Tăng đoàn. Việc đồng ý cho người nữ được gia nhập Tăng đoàn đã cho thấy sự từ bi và bình đẳng của Đức Phật đối với người nữ trong xã hội Ấn Độ thời bấy giờ.

Học giả Daisaku Ikeda trong một nghiên cứu của mình đã nêu lên một nhận xét về tinh thần bình đẳng của Phật giáo như sau: “Vượt qua những quan điểm hẹp hòi về huyết chủng, đẳng cấp và dân tộc, Phật giáo thể hiện tính kiên quyết về sự bình đẳng của bốn đẳng cấp truyền thống trong xã hội Ấn Độ” [5].

Tuy Đức Phật đã cố gắng thay đổi định kiến của xã hội về người nữ nhưng rất khó để dứt hẳn, minh chứng là các bản kinh Đại thừa về sau vẫn còn có cái nhìn thiên vị về người nam hơn người nữ, điển hình là kinh Pháp Hoa trong phẩm Đề Bà Đạt Đa ghi lại sự kiện Long nữ thành Phật nhưng phải chuyển thành thân nam rồi sau mới thành Phật. Trước khi Long nữ thành Phật, ngài Xá Lợi Phất khẳng định người nữ có năm chướng ngại: “Một, chẳng đặng làm Phạm Thiên Vương, hai chẳng đặng làm Đế Thích, ba chẳng đặng làm Ma vương, bốn chẳng đặng làm Chuyển Luân Thánh vương, năm chẳng đặng làm Phật” [6]. Điều này cũng được nhắc đến trong Luật Tứ phần của Tỳ-kheo ni. Trong kinh Địa Tạng một trong số những lợi ích của việc đọc kinh và chiêm ngưỡng hình tượng Bồ tát là: “Đời sau thân gái sẽ chuyển thành thân trai” [7]. Có thể thấy, Đức Phật đã cố gắng thay đổi một số định kiến về người nữ trong xã hội Ấn Độ, song trong quá trình phát triển, Phật giáo cũng phải tùy nghi phương tiện đối với hệ thống pháp luật của xã hội đã có từ lâu đời. Tuy nhiên, đấy là vấn đề nằm ngoài khảo cứu trong phạm vi bài viết này.

VẤN ĐỀ THỌ GIỚI CỦA THÁNH NI Mahāpajāpati Gotamī

Theo kinh điển Nam truyền, bài kinh nói về sự xuất gia của Thánh Ni Mahāpajāpati Gotamī và tám kỉnh pháp được tìm thấy trong Tăng Chi Bộ kinh, chương Tám pháp, phẩm Gotamī. Trong Luật tạng Cullavagga, phần Mười, cũng như Hán tạng tương đương là bài kinh Cù Đàm Di thuộc trung A-Hàm. Các truyền thống đều cho rằng bà Gotamī là vị Tỳ-kheo đầu tiên và là người đại điện để Đức Phật thành lập Ni đoàn.

Theo sử liệu, khi Đức Phật thành đạo khoảng ba năm, Ngài quyết định trở về quê nhà hoằng hóa và thăm viếng phụ mẫu. Trong lần thăm viếng này, Di mẫu Kiều Đàm Di sau khi nghe Đức Phật thuyết pháp đã chứng đắc sơ quả Tu đà hoàn [8]. Theo trích dịch thiết yếu Luật Tứ phần Tỳ-kheo Ni, cho rằng đợt trở về này, đức vua Tịnh Phạn đã xin xuất gia nhưng Đức Phật quán xét thấy căn tánh của Phụ vương dù xuất gia cũng không có sở đắc nên bảo: “Xin Phụ vương chớ có vọng cầu, cứ tuần tự tu tập thứ lớp sẽ đặng diệu pháp này” [9], sau đó vua xin thọ Tam quy và Ngũ giới. Sau khi nhà vua thọ giới xong, Đức Phật thuyết diệu pháp cho vua nghe, vua được lợi lạc về tinh thần, thân tâm hoan hỷ, ở giữa cung đình xướng lên rằng: “Ai ở trong hoàng cung và thân nhân hoàng tộc muốn xuất gia tu hành ở trong giáo pháp của Như Lai, ta sẽ hứa cho” [10]. Hoàng hậu Mahāpajāpati Gotamī nghe vua nói thì đến xin Đức Phật xuất gia nhưng Phật từ chối và bảo: “Thôi đi! Thôi đi! Này Di mẫu! Ta không chấp nhận được, vì từ xưa đến nay, tất cả chư Phật trong ba đời không có Phật nào cho phép người nữ xuất gia tu hành trong giáo pháp của Như Lai. Vậy Di mẫu và các người nữ cứ y theo giáo pháp của Ta ở tại gia cạo tóc, đắp mặc ca-sa siêng năng tinh tấn tu hành sẽ đắc đạo quả, chư Phật vị lai cũng như thế. Ta nay cho Kiều Đàm Di và các người nữ giáo pháp này mà tu tập” [11]. Việc Đức Phật dạy di mẫu ở tại gia cắt tóc, đắp mặc ca-sa ít có kinh điển nhắc đến nhưng theo tác giả cũng có thể việc người tại gia đắp y vàng, cạo tóc không bị ngăn cấm vào thời gian đầu. Trong tác phẩm Đức Phật Gotama của Hajime Nakamura, ông cũng cho rằng khi nghe tin Đức Phật đắp y vàng thì Công chúa Yasodharā cũng mặc y vàng [12]. Trong kinh Đại Ái Đạo Tỳ-kheo thì không thấy thuật lại việc Đức Phật khuyên bảo bà tự cạo tóc đắp y mà chỉ bảo bà rằng: “Người nên trọn đời tự tịnh khiết nơi bản thân, phạm hạnh vững chãi, giữ ý mình cho trong sáng, đừng để khởi tưởng thì sẽ điềm nhiên như đạo. Không niệm tà dục thì tâm đạt đến chỗ vắng lặng an vui” [13].

Người nữ xuất gia thuở ban đầu như bà Mahāpajāpati Gotamī là y cứ vào bát kỉnh pháp mà thành Tỳ-kheo ni, chưa phải thực hành hai năm học pháp. Có thể nói đây là thiện lai Tỳ-kheo trong số tám loại Tỳ-kheo.

Về phần mình, bà cho rằng ở tại gia không thể tu được nên cố gắng xin Đức Phật đến chín lần nhưng Ngài vẫn không cho. Trong bản kinh này bà đã xin Đức Phật tới chín lần cho ta thấy lòng quyết tâm xuất gia của bà rất mạnh mẽ. Trong Tăng Chi Bộ kinh thì Đức Phật chỉ từ chối ngắn gọn “chớ có ưa thích nữ nhân được xuất gia, từ bỏ gia đình, sống không gia đình trong pháp và luật do Như Lai thuyết giảng” [14]. Bà xin như vậy ba lần nhưng Đức Phật vẫn từ chối. Trong Cullavagga của Nam truyền cũng như trung A-hàm của Hán tạng nội dung cũng tương tự. Tóm lại tuy các kinh, luật có nội dung không giống nhau nhưng cũng đều cùng một nội dung là Đức Phật không cho phép bà xuất gia trong giáo pháp. Lý do Đức Phật chưa cho phép người nữ xuất gia lần này bởi vì nếu chấp nhận cho người nữ xuất gia, sẽ nhận sự công kích của ngoại đạo cho rằng Ngài vì thiên vị thân tộc mà cho họ xuất gia. Ngài muốn để cho xã hội từ từ tiếp nhận sự việc cho người nữ xuất gia cũng như để thử thách sự quyết tâm, lòng mong muốn xuất gia của di mẫu và những người phụ nữ khác. Ngoài ra, cuộc sống xuất gia thời Đức Phật là cuộc sống nay đây mai đó, lang thang trong rừng, ngủ nghỉ dưới gốc cây, rất nguy hiểm cho người nữ nếu sống đời sống như vậy. Có lẽ vì những lý do trên mà Đức Phật chưa cho phép người nữ xuất gia. Theo Đại Phật Sử: “Lý do từ chối vì Đức Thế Tôn đã quyết định không phải cho phép nữ giới xuất gia một cách dễ dàng mà chỉ sau khi họ đã thể hiện nhiều nỗ lực cố gắng để xin phép xuất gia. Chỉ khi ấy họ mới nhận ra rằng để trở thành một vị Tỳ-kheo ni trong giáo pháp là điều khó đạt được và họ sẽ gìn giữ phẩm hạnh Tỳ-kheo ni bằng sự tinh tấn không ngừng nghỉ. Đức Thế Tôn muốn họ quý trọng cơ hội được xuất gia sau khi đã thể hiện nhiều cố gắng” [15].

Lần thứ hai là vào năm thứ năm sau khi thành đạo, Đức Phật trở về thăm vua cha bệnh nặng, sau khi đức vua băng hà, Di mẫu Gotamī xin Phật xuất gia nhưng Đức Phật lại ba lần từ chối. Bà đau khổ, khóc lóc đảnh lễ Thế Tôn rồi lui về. Sau đó, bà nhờ người cạo tóc, khoác y vàng cùng với năm trăm người dòng họ Sakya đi bộ một quảng đường xa để xin Đức Phật xuất gia. Nhưng Phật vẫn không đồng ý, sau đó nhờ Tôn giả A Nan xin Phật ba lần, Ngài mới đồng ý. Ở đây có thể thấy, việc bà và năm trăm mệnh phụ Phu nhân cạo tóc, đắp y vàng đi giữa trời nắng khắt khe của thời tiết Ấn Độ, đường đi với nhiều sỏi đá, khó khăn, vất vả là một việc chưa từng xảy ra tại Ấn Độ, gây sự chú ý và cảm thông của dân chúng, có lẽ dân chúng đã dần dần chấp nhận cho phép người nữ xuất gia. Nhưng đời sống xuất gia, nay đây mai đó, sống trong rừng, ngủ dưới gốc cây quả thật rất nguy hiểm cho người nữ; vì thế sau khi cho người nữ xuất gia, Đức Phật đã ra điều kiện người Ni không được sống quá xa Tăng đoàn, không được an cư nơi không có Tăng đoàn để bảo vệ cho người nữ.

Theo kinh Đại Ái Đạo Tỳ-kheo ni, khi bà Mahāpajāpati Gotamī chấp nhận tám kỉnh pháp, Đức Phật liền trao cho bà mười giới làm Sa di ni. Sau khi lãnh thọ giới, bà hành trì nhất nhất chẳng để thiếu sót, sau ba năm hành trì bà xin Đức Phật thọ giới Cụ túc. Bản kinh này cho rằng bà Mahāpajāpati Gotamī thọ giới Sa di rồi sau mới thọ giới Cụ túc. Điều này nghe qua có vẻ hợp lý vì trong tám kỉnh pháp có giới điều là: “Sau khi học tập sáu pháp trong hai năm, phải đến xin thọ Cụ túc giới trước hai Tăng chúng” [16]. Luật Nam truyền cũng có nói rằng: “Cô Ni tu tập sự đã thực hành sự học tập về sáu pháp trong hai năm nên tầm cầu sự tu lên bậc trên ở cả hai hội chúng” [17] .

Sau đó, có một số Tỳ-kheo ni nghi ngờ việc thọ giới của bà đã nói với bà rằng bà chưa được tu lên bậc trên (thọ giới Cụ túc). Bà đem điều này nói với ngài Ānanda, Ngài thưa hỏi Đức Phật về vấn đề trên và được đáp rằng: “Này Ānanda, kể từ lúc bà Mahāpajāpati Gotamī thọ nhận tám kỉnh pháp, chính vào lúc ấy bà đã được tu lên bậc trên” [18]. Trong Tăng Chi Bộ kinh thì nói: “Này Ānanda, nếu Mahāpajāpati Gotamī chấp nhận tám kính pháp, thời Gotamī có thể được thọ Cụ túc giới” [19]. Kinh Trung A-hàm cũng cho rằng: “Nếu Cù-đàm-di Đại Ái phụng trì tám pháp Tôn sư này thì được ở trong pháp luật chân chánh mà xuất gia học đạo, được thọ giới Cụ túc, làm Tỳ-kheo ni” [20]. Trong Trích dịch thiết yếu Tứ phần luật Tỳ-kheo ni ghi rằng: “Khi Đức Thế Tôn còn tại thế, người nữ lợi căn đích thân đến chỗ Phật. Ngài nói thiện lai, cũng có người nữ tối sơ xuất gia thọ pháp đắc giới Cụ túc là Vương hậu Ma-ha-ba-xà-ba-đề Tỳ-kheo ni” [21].

Từ những ghi chép trên, ta có thể tạm kết luận, người nữ xuất gia thuở ban đầu như bà Mahāpajāpati Gotamī là y cứ vào Bát kỉnh pháp mà thành Tỳ-kheo ni, chưa phải thực hành hai năm học pháp. Có thể nói đây là thiện lai Tỳ-kheo trong số tám loại Tỳ-kheo. Nhưng về sau người nữ xuất gia ngày càng đông và có nhiều thành phần phức tạp, trình độ, gia cảnh khác nhau, có những vị xuất gia chưa bao lâu lại độ người khác xuất gia, do đó Đức Phật chế tối thiểu phải mười hai năm giới lạp và thông hiểu giới luật mới có thể làm thầy độ Ni. Lại có những người nữ xuất gia không bao lâu lại hoàn tục, hoặc những người nữ có bào thai đã đậu xin xuất gia… làm cho ngoại đạo chê trách Tỳ-kheo ni phạm giới cấm nên Đức Phật chế giới phải cho học giới hai năm để rèn luyện tính tình của người nữ quen với cuộc sống xuất gia đầy khổ cực. Tóm lại, chúng ta có thể kết luận bà Mahāpajāpati Gotamī đã thọ giới Tỳ-kheo ni với Đức Phật và không thọ giới Sa di ni hay phải thực hành hai năm học pháp như những Tỳ-kheo ni khác, đó là do những đặc thù lịch sử lúc bấy giờ.

TẠM KẾT

Việc Đức Phật cho thành lập giáo đoàn Tỳ-kheo ni trong giáo pháp của mình đã đưa địa vị người nữ lên hàng chúng trung tôn, được mọi người tôn kính cúng dường. Quan trọng hơn là Ngài đã phá vỡ thành kiến trọng nam khinh nữ đã ăn sâu vào trong văn hóa của người dân Ấn Độ cũng như mặc cảm tự ti của người nữ khi Ngài tuyên bố rằng người nữ cũng có khả năng chứng đắc như người nam trong giáo pháp của Ngài. Những ai đến với giáo pháp của Ngài chỉ cầu mong thoát khỏi khổ đau sinh tử, chứng đắc đạo quả chứ không phải đi tìm sự đối đãi công bằng của thế gian. Phật pháp cũng không rời thế gian mà tồn tại, Đức Phật chỉ phương tiện mà tùy duyên hóa độ còn Phật tính thì bình đẳng như nhau. Mọi người đều có khả năng thành Phật không phân biệt là nam hay nữ. Dù Ngài buộc Ni đoàn phải sống và sinh hoạt lệ thuộc vào Tăng đoàn nhưng chủ yếu là để bảo vệ cho Ni đoàn chứ hoàn toàn không vì phân biệt đối xử, Ngài vẫn cho phép Ni đoàn phần lớn được tự trị, chứng tỏ ngài công nhận Ni đoàn là một phần của giáo đoàn, không có Ni đoàn thì giáo đoàn của Ngài sẽ không trọn vẹn. Ngài đã từng tuyên bố: “Các đệ tử Tỳ-kheo, Tỳ-kheo ni, Ưu-bà-tắc, Ưu-bà-di của Ta chưa đầy đủ, cho nên Ta chưa có thể nhập Niết-bàn” [22]. Trong Tăng Chi Bộ kinh, Đức Phật cũng khẳng định người nữ cũng là thành phần quan trọng trong việc duy trì giáo pháp được tồn tại lâu dài: “Ở đây này Kimbila, khi Như Lai nhập diệt, các Tỳ-kheo, Tỳ-kheo ni, nam cư sĩ, nữ cư sĩ sống tôn trọng và vâng lời bậc Đạo Sư; sống tôn trọng và vâng lời Pháp, sống tôn trọng và vâng lời chúng Tăng; sống tôn trọng và vâng lời học pháp; sống tôn trọng và vâng lời lẫn nhau. Đây là nhân, đây là duyên, này Kimbila, khi Như Lai nhập diệt, diệu pháp được tồn tại lâu dài” [23]. Minh chứng hùng hồn về sự bình đẳng trong sự chứng đắc là đã có vô số Tỳ-kheo ni trong giáo pháp của Ngài tu hành đắc quả A-la-hán. Tỳ-kheo có mười vị đại đệ tử thì bên Tỳ-kheo ni cũng có mười vị Thánh Ni đầy đủ thần thông và trí tuệ không kém.

Trong các vị nữ đệ tử… mang thô y, tối thắng là Kisāgotami

Trong các vị nữ đệ tử Tỳ-kheo ni của Ta, đầy đủ tin thắng giải, này các Tỳ-kheo, tối thắng là Sigalāmātā” [24].

Theo Đại Phật Sử: “Lý do từ chối vì Đức Thế Tôn đã quyết định không phải cho phép nữ giới xuất gia một cách dễ dàng mà chỉ sau khi họ đã thể hiện nhiều nỗ lực cố gắng để xin phép xuất gia. Chỉ khi ấy họ mới nhận ra rằng để trở thành một vị Tỳ-kheo ni trong giáo pháp là điều khó đạt được và họ sẽ gìn giữ phẩm hạnh Tỳ-kheo ni bằng sự tinh tấn không ngừng nghỉ. Đức Thế Tôn muốn họ quý trọng cơ hội được xuất gia sau khi đã thể hiện nhiều cố gắng”.

Dưới sự lãnh đạo của Mahāpajāpati Gotamī Ni chúng đã có những thành tựu nhất định và đã chứng minh cho nhân dân Ấn Độ thấy rằng người nữ cũng có khả năng ngang bằng người nam. Sự xuất gia và chứng đắc của bà đóng góp không nhỏ trong công cuộc giải phóng nữ giới thời Ấn Độ, làm cho nữ giới Ấn Độ có niềm tin vững chắc hơn và giúp họ có thêm một sự lựa chọn khác với đời sống thế tục.
