PHẬT GIÁO Ở SUKHOTHAI
Sự thành lập và mở rộng lãnh thổ của đế quốc Mông Cổ đã tạo ra những biến động chính trị mạnh mẽ ở khu vực châu Á thế kỷ XIII. Xuất phát từ vùng đồng cỏ mênh mông ở phía bắc Trung Hoa, người Mông Cổ đã xây dựng đế chế của mình trên lưng ngựa, gieo rắc nỗi kinh hoàng khắp lục địa Á – Âu. Những cuộc tấn công quân sự của Mông Cổ xuống vùng Vân Nam (Trung Hoa) và Đại Việt đã tác động mạnh đến lịch sử phát triển của các cộng đồng tại Thái Lan và Việt Nam.
Người Thái là cộng đồng sinh sống ở khu vực Vân Nam, Bắc Lào, Myanmar… Trước thế kỷ XIII, người Thái sinh sống dọc theo thượng lưu sông Menam. Năm 1253, Hốt Tất Liệt đánh chiếm Đại Lý, đe dọa Đại Việt và Pagan đã gây nên làn sóng di dân của người Thái khu vực này.
Làn sóng di cư ấy góp phần hình thành các quốc gia dân tộc người Thái trên vùng đất Thái Lan ngày nay. Tại đồng bằng Chao Phraya, vương quốc Sukhothai ra đời vào năm 1238.
Các vị vua Sukhothai rất quan tâm Phật giáo. Trong buổi đầu vương quốc, Phật giáo tại đây phân hóa thành những vùng theo các dòng truyền thừa khác nhau. Khu vực chịu ảnh hưởng Angkor theo Phật giáo Mahayana. Trong khi khu vực Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Lampang… chịu ảnh hưởng của Theravada Myanmar. Nakhon Sri Thammarat ở miền Nam chịu ảnh hưởng Theravada Sri Lanka.
Dưới thời kì trị vì của Ramkhamhaeng, các thế lực Angkor và Srivijaya bị đẩy lùi khỏi lãnh thổ người Thái, Phật giáo Mahayana cũng vắng bóng tại đây. Vua Ramkhamhaeng đã lựa chọn dòng truyền thừa Theravada từ Sri Lanka làm nền tảng tinh thần cho vương quốc. Đáng lưu ý, kể từ khi Phật giáo suy tàn ở Ấn Độ, Sri Lanka đã đóng vai trò là trung tâm truyền bá Phật giáo Theravada lớn nhất. Dưới triều vua Parakramabahu nắm quyền tại Sri Lanka vào năm 1153, các Tăng đoàn được cử đến những quốc gia như Burma, Pegu, Lanna (Bắc Thái Lan), Chân Lạp và Lanchang (Lào), …1 Năm 1257, nhiều vị tỳ kheo từ Thái Lan đến Sri Lanka thụ giới Cụ túc (Upasampadā-vidhi), về sau phép này rất nổi tiếng ở Thái Lan với tên gọi Lankavamsa2. Sau khi thụ giới, các Tăng sĩ quay trở về Nakhon Sri Thammarat xây dựng dòng truyền thừa Theravada Sri Lanka tại Thái Lan và truyền bá khắp Sukhothai.
Từ năm 1277, Phật giáo Theravada của Tăng đoàn Lankavamsa trở nên phổ biến và thực hành rộng rãi trên khắp Sukhothai. Năm 1317, Lo T’ai kế vị Ramkhamhaeng. Là người rất sùng đạo, ông cho lập một số Buddhapada (dấu chân Phật) mô phỏng theo một công trình tương tự trên đỉnh Adam của Sri Lanka. Nhưng người kế vị Lo T’ai mới là một Phật tử thuần thành. Lu T’ai, hoàng đế thứ V vương triều Sukhothai, là học giả nghiên cứu Phật giáo uyên thâm với tác phẩm nổi tiếng Traibhumikatha (Ba thế giới).
Đây là công trình đồ sộ hơn 30 bộ, miêu tả tường tận về nhân sinh quan và thế giới quan Phật giáo, thảo luận về các vấn đề sắc – dục và việc chúng sinh nhân thiện nghiệp ác nghiệp mà chịu cảnh vui buồn trong tam giới. Với sự mộ đạo và kiến văn Phật học thâm sâu, nhà vua Lu T’ai đã xuất gia tu hành vào năm 1362 tại chùa Ana Bavannàrama. Đây là vị vua người Thái đầu tiên xuất gia tu đạo. Nhiều nhà nghiên cứu cho rằng, chính hành động này đã hình thành truyền thống xuất gia của nam giới Thái Lan đến tận ngày nay.
Một đóng góp quan trọng của Phật giáo Sukhothai đối với lịch sử Phật giáo Thái Lan là việc tổ chức các Tăng đoàn theo giáo hội thống nhất trong cả nước. Mô phỏng mô hình giáo hội tại Sri Lanka với chức vị “Đại tăng lĩnh” (Mahasvamin) và “Đại tăng” (Svamin), vua Ramkhamhaeng đã đặt ra chức “Tăng vương” và “Tăng giả tôn trưởng” để quản lý công việc Tăng đoàn5. Tăng đoàn Sukhothai lúc này có thể chia thành hai bộ phái tả hữu. Việc phân chia có hai cách giải thích. Một là phân theo Tăng đoàn cũ vốn có trước khi thỉnh Tăng đoàn từ Sri Lanka về và Tăng đoàn Sri Lanka. Hai là phân chia theo nơi tu tập là ở làng xóm (Gàmavàsi – “city-dwellers)6 và ở các A lan nhã (Arannavasi – “forest-dwellers”). Tăng đoàn tại các làng xóm chủ yếu thực hành công việc nghiên cứu kinh sách và hoằng pháp. Còn tăng nhân tại các Arannavasi thể hiện sự thoát ly khỏi dân cư, tập trung vào việc tu tập, giải thoát.
Mặc dù Sukhothai chỉ tồn tại gần hai thế kỷ (1238-1436) nhưng hai vị vua sùng đạo của vương triều là Ramkhamhaeng cùng Lu T’ai đã củng cố và đưa Phật giáo Theravada được truyền từ Sri Lanka trở thành quốc giáo từ thế kỷ XIII – XIV cho đến tận ngày nay. Các vương triều sau này của người Thái đã tiếp nối dòng chảy Phật giáo thời Sukhothai, củng cố sự phát triển Phật giáo Theravada ở Thái Lan và các nước lân cận. Đặc biệt, chính Tăng đoàn Thái Lan sau này lại quay về Sri Lanka truyền lại phép thụ giới Tỳ kheo đã mai một vào năm 1750 theo lời yêu cầu từ hoàng gia Sri Lanka. Về sau, dòng truyền thừa này được gọi tên là Thái Tông (Siamese School), một tông phái có số sư tăng đông nhất Sri Lanka ngày nay. Có thể nói, từ khi người Thái lập quốc ở vùng đồng bằng Menam – Mekong, Phật giáo đã gắn liền với lịch sử dân tộc Thái.
Nhìn ra bối cảnh rộng lớn hơn của khu vực Đông Nam Á, Phật giáo Thái Lan còn tác động đến lịch sử Phật giáo tại các quốc gia lân cận như Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Lào, Campuchia. Trong những diễn tiến của Phật giáo Đông Nam Á lục địa sau thế kỷ XIII – XIV, chúng ta thấy dòng chảy mạnh mẽ của Phật giáo Theravada có nguồn gốc từ Sri Lanka, trong đó có sự đóng góp rất lớn của Phật giáo Thái Lan.
PHẬT GIÁO Ở ĐẠI VIỆT
Trong khi đó, tại phía bắc bán đảo Đông Dương, nhà nước Đại Việt lại có sự khác biệt rất lớn so với các quốc gia còn lại của Đông Nam Á lục địa. Từ khi truyền vào miền Bắc Việt Nam, Phật giáo đã gắn với truyền thống Mahayana từ các trung tâm ở Nam Ấn. Nếu như Phật giáo Thái Lan bị tác động mạnh bởi trung tâm Phật giáo Theravada Sri Lanka thì Việt Nam đối diện với sự mở rộng của dòng truyền thừa Mahayana từ Trung Hoa. Trước thế kỷ XIII, cả ba dòng thiền ở Đại Việt đều xuất xứ từ Trung Hoa. Phải trải qua hàng trăm năm thai nghén, Phật giáo Đại Việt mới hình thành nên một dòng thiền riêng mình – Thiền phái Trúc Lâm Yên Tử. Dòng thiền này nhận được sự bảo trợ của hoàng tộc nhà Trần (1225- 1400) giống như những gì hoàng gia Sukhothai đã làm với Phật giáo Theravada Srilanka.
Cũng giống các dân tộc Thái ở Vân Nam, nửa cuối thế kỷ XIII, các quốc gia trên lãnh thổ Việt Nam ngày nay phải đương đầu với sự đe dọa của đội quân Mông Cổ. Người Mông Cổ đã ba lần mang quân xâm lược Đại Việt (1258, 1285, 1287-1288) nhưng đều thất bại. Vương triều nhà Trần không chỉ là triều đại của những tướng lĩnh quân sự tài ba mà còn có những vị vua mộ đạo.
Trần Thái Tông – vua mở đầu triều Trần là một người tinh thông Phật lý. Trong bài tựa sách Thiền tông chỉ nam được in lại trong Khóa Hư Lục, nhà vua đã cho biết việc từng có ý định tu hành nhưng bất thành9. Trước tác Phật học của Trần Thái Tông để lại có tất cả 6 bộ10. Là vị vua khai sáng triều đại, sự ủng hộ nhiệt thành của Trần Thái Tông đã thúc đẩy Phật giáo phát triển mạnh mẽ trong giới quý tộc và xã hội đời Trần. Không khí sùng Phật thời Trần phản ánh phần nào qua lời cảm thán của nho thần Lê Quát vào cuối thế kỷ XIV: “Trên từ vương công dưới đến dân thường, hễ bố thí vào việc nhà Phật, dù đến hết tiền của cũng không sẻn tiếc… Chỗ nào có người ở, tất có chùa Phật, bỏ đi rồi lại dựng lên, nát đi rồi lại sửa lại, lâu đài chuông trống chiếm đến nửa phần với dân cư. Đạo Phật thịnh rất dễ mà đạo được rất mực tôn sùng”.
Đạo Phật thời Trần không chỉ lan rộng, còn đạt đến sự tinh diệu trong đạo pháp. Thiền tông đời Trần đã phát triển mạnh với những thiền sư nổi tiếng xuất thân từ hoàng tộc. Trần Tung là một đại quý tộc, anh trai Hưng Đạo vương Trần Quốc Tuấn, là cư sĩ Thiền tông lỗi lạc nhà Trần. Ông được xem là người đã dẫn dắt và khai thông “đốn ngộ” cho Trần Nhân Tông – vị vua lãnh đạo hai cuộc kháng chiến chống Mông – Nguyên (1285, 1287- 1288) và đưa Phật giáo Đại Việt lên đỉnh cao. Năm 1299, thượng hoàng Trần Nhân Tông xuất gia tu hành tại chùa Hoa Yên, núi Yên Tử (Quảng Ninh). Việc ông xuất gia đã đánh dấu bước ngoặt quan trọng của Phật giáo Đại Việt, đánh dấu sự ra đời Thiền phái nội sinh đầu tiên của người Việt, Trúc Lâm Yên Tử.
Sau khi Trần Nhân Tông xuất gia (Trúc Lâm Đầu Đà), các kinh sách nhà Phật được triều đình ấn tống ban phát khắp thiên hạ để chấn chỉnh việc thực hành tôn chỉ của nhà Phật12. Đây là những bước đi đầu tiên tiến tới thống nhất hành đạo và trì giới của Tăng Ni Đại Việt. Trúc Lâm Đầu Đà đã đi khắp nước hoằng đạo, khuyên dân chúng làm lành lánh dữ, thực hành giáo lý căn bản của đạo Phật là Thập Thiện.
Những nhà tư tưởng đầu tiên của Trúc Lâm Yên Tử đã thể hiện rõ tinh thần “đốn ngộ” của Thiền Tông. Nhờ đó, Trúc Lâm Yên Tử đã lựa chọn con đường đến với chánh đạo giữa chốn hồng trần. Lẽ xuất thế của Thiền Tông đời Trần không nằm ở nơi thanh tu chốn núi rừng mà chính tại tâm: “Miễn được lòng rồi Chẳng còn phép khác”.
Vì thế sự phát triển của Thiền phái Trúc Lâm Yên Tử gắn liền với những biến động chính trị xã hội Đại Việt đương thời. Khuynh hướng phát triển tất yếu của Trúc Lâm Yên Tử chính là hình thành giáo hội thống nhất ở Đại Việt. Đây không chỉ là việc đạo mà còn là việc đời. Trúc Lâm Đầu Đà đã tận dụng vai trò cầu nối của mình giữa Thiền phái Trúc Lâm và triều đình nhà Trần.
Năm 1308, sự kiện Trúc Lâm Đầu Đà truyền y bát cho Pháp Loa làm trụ trì chùa Siêu Loại, đứng đầu Thiền phái Trúc Lâm Yên Tử có sự chứng kiến và bảo chứng của người đứng đầu triều Trần bấy giờ – Trần Anh Tông, con trai Trúc Lâm Đầu Đà. Chính những sự sắp đặt này đã tạo sự ủng hộ vững chắc về chính trị cho hoạt động của Thiền phái Trúc Lâm Yên Tử, tiến tới hình thành giáo hội thống nhất. Năm 1313, Pháp Loa phụng chiếu đến chùa Vĩnh Nghiêm, Lương Giang trụ trì, đặt trụ sở trung ương giáo hội Trúc Lâm ở đó15.
Đây là lần đầu tiên trong lịch sử Phật giáo Việt Nam có sự xuất hiện của tổ chức giáo hội thống nhất. Các hoạt động quy định chức vụ Tăng sĩ, kiểm tra tự viện, kiểm tra tăng tịch được tiến hành thống nhất trong cả nước. Để kiểm soát và đảm bảo chất lượng Tăng đoàn, giáo hội quy định ba năm mới lập đàn độ Tăng Ni. Trong thời gian Pháp Loa đứng đầu giáo hội đã có 15.000 vị được thụ giới. Năm 1313, 100 ngôi chùa trong cả Đại Việt thuộc quyền quản lý của giáo hội Trúc Lâm.
Dưới sự phát triển của Tăng đoàn Trúc Lâm, Phật giáo đã đạt đến vị trí quốc giáo trong xã hội Đại Việt thế kỷ XIV. Nhìn rộng ra bản đồ tôn giáo toàn khu vực Đông Nam Á lục địa, có thể thấy ưu thế của văn hóa Phật giáo. Đạo Phật đã chiếm vị trí quan trọng trong đời sống chính trị xã hội tại các quốc gia Đông Nam Á lục địa giai đoạn này. Tuy nhiên, vị thế Phật giáo tại Đại Việt đã xuất hiện khuynh hướng thoái trào khi Nho giáo dần dần phát triển. Khác với các quốc gia khác của Đông Nam Á vốn chịu ảnh hưởng mạnh mẽ văn hóa Ấn Độ, khu vực miền Bắc Việt Nam trong lịch sử đã là nơi hợp lưu từ hai nền văn hóa lớn của lịch sử nhân loại: Trung Hoa và Ấn Độ.
Bên cạnh sự mô phỏng thiết chế chính trị Trung Hoa, triều đình Lý – Trần vẫn duy trì nét độc đáo của mình, khi cho thấy tinh thần hỗn dung tam giáo Phật – Nho – Đạo trong đường lối trị nước. Tinh thần tam giáo đồng nguyên dựa trên nền tảng Phật giáo, tôn giáo đã xác lập ưu thế ngay từ những ngày đầu độc lập. Điều này thể hiện rất rõ trong quan điểm trị nước của nhà Trần: “Phật không chia Nam, Bắc, đều có thể tu cầu. Tính đều có trí ngụ, cùng giúp phần giác ngộ. Đó là phương diện dụ dẫn quần mê, đường tắt tỏ nẻo sinh tử, là đại giáo của đức Phật ta. Làm cán cân cho hậu thế, làm khuôn phép cho tương lai, là trọng trách của bậc Tiên Thánh”.
Nhìn chung, do nhận được sự ủng hộ của hoàng gia và giới tinh hoa trong xã hội, Phật giáo tại Sukhothai và Đại Việt đã đạt đến vị thế quốc giáo vào thế kỷ thứ XIII và XIV. Đối với vương quốc Sukhothai, sự thừa nhận và bảo trợ Phật giáo của vua Ramkhamhaeng đã giúp Phật giáo trong cả nước thống nhất theo dòng truyền thừa Theravada từ Sri Lanka. Còn ở Việt Nam, các vua đầu đời Trần đều là những Thiền gia như Trần Thái Tông, Trần Thánh Tông, Trần Nhân Tông. Cùng với sự ra đời của Thiền phái nội sinh Trúc Lâm Yên Tử, giáo hội phật giáo thống nhất đầu tiên tại Đại Việt được thành lập vào năm 1313. Đặc biệt, sự kiện hai vị vua Lu T’ai của Sukhothai và Trần Nhân Tông của Đại Việt đều xếp hoàng bào, khoác tăng bào càng củng cố thêm địa vị Phật giáo trong đời sống chính trị – xã hội hai nước.
Do các giá trị của Phật giáo vốn gần gũi với đời sống cư dân bản địa Đông Nam Á nên Phật giáo nhanh chóng trở thành nền tảng tinh thần của một số quốc gia tại đây. Trong dòng chảy lịch sử Phật giáo Đông Nam Á, Sukhothai và Đại Việt đã có những điểm tương đồng trong thời kì xác lập vị trí quốc giáo của Phật giáo vào thế kỷ XIII – XIV. Đây là thời kì Phật giáo chiếm vị thế chủ đạo trong cả khu vực Đông Nam Á lục địa. Dù là Theravada hay Mahayana, các giá trị cốt lõi Phật giáo đã được các nước Đông Nam Á hấp thu và chuyển hóa thành những giá trị của riêng mình. Phật giáo ở Đông Nam Á, cụ thể là Sukhothai và Đại Việt thời Trần, đã thể hiện rõ tinh thần nhập thế của Đức Phật ngay từ những ngày đầu hoằng đạo.
