Trên thế giới hiện nay có trên 200 nước với khoảng 2.000 dân tộc khác nhau, mỗi dân tộc có một phong tục, tập quán riêng biệt của từng dân tộc đó. Được lưu truyền từ thế hệ này sang thế hệ khác, Việt Nam là một đất nước đa dân tộc, mỗi dân tộc đều có tập tục riêng tạo thành bản sắc văn hóa dân tộc Việt vô cùng đặc sắc. Chính vì thế ở Việt Nam có rất nhiều phong tục, tập quán cao quý của ông bà ta để lại. Chúng ta nên xem xét để phân định rõ cái gì cao quý, cái nào đẹp và có giá trị thì ta phải phát huy, duy trì nó và đừng lầm tưởng nó là tập tục lỗi thời, lạc hậu.
Hiện nay, những nước phát triển như ở châu Mỹ người dân đón năm mới bằng phong tục khoai tây để dưới gầm giường, đến giờ giao thừa thì lấy lên, nếu được củ khoai gọt sạch thì trong năm ấy họ hy vọng sẽ được mùa to. Ở Nhật có phong tục trồng cây thông và tre trong ngày Tết để tượng trưng cho kiên cường và sức mạnh. Ở Liên Xô cũ, năm mới người ta lấy lúa mì rắc quanh nhà, với mong muốn mùa màng sẽ được bội thu…
Ở Việt Nam ta cũng có rất nhiều tập tục trong ngày Tết như: tục đánh cầu ở triều nhà Lý là biểu tượng cho sức mạnh, tục dựng nêu, xông nhà, đưa ông Táo… mà nhất là tục rước ông bà. Tục rước ông bà vào ngày 30 Tết là tục lệ mang truyền thống cao quý nhất của dân tộc, nó thể hiện được tính “ẩm thủy tri nguyên”. Không nhà nào mà không chuẩn bị một cách tươm tất trên bàn thờ với những bánh mứt, bông trái, đèn nhang để đón rước ông bà về ăn Tết với con cháu.
Giờ rước ông bà tùy theo giờ thích hợp của từng gia đình, nhưng chỉ trong ngày 30 (hoặc 29 tháng thiếu) tất cả thành viên trong gia đình đều ăn mặc sạch sẽ, tề chỉnh để làm lễ. Giờ phút thiêng liêng này, trong gia đình không một ai được cãi vã, gây gổ hay phiền muộn, mà tất cả đều vui vẻ, vì hương linh tổ tiên đã về với con cháu trong những ngày xuân.
Lẽ trời đất luôn xoay chuyển như bất tận. Hết xuân rồi sang hạ, qua hạ lại đến thu, thu tàn rồi sang đông… Tuy bất tận khôn cùng nhưng cái gì có khởi nguyên tức phải có tận cùng. Với sự đa dạng phong phú của nhân loại, từ xa xưa người ta đã hình thành được sự bắt đầu và kết thúc trong sự vận hành của một năm.
Âm lịch có từ đời nhà Hạ và lấy 12 địa chi đặt tên cho 12 tháng. Tháng Giêng là tháng Dần được chọn làm tháng đầu năm để người ta ăn Tết. Tết Nguyên Đán bắt đầu vào tháng Dần. Một sự lựa chọn rất tuyệt diệu lý tưởng của người xưa, vì lúc đó thời tiết lạnh của mùa đông vừa hết, ngày xuân ấm áp, khí hậu thanh mát, hoa lá xanh tươi, nó hòa nhập vào tâm hồn con người và làm cho con người như tan biến đi tất cả những gì cực nhọc, buồn phiền sau một năm làm việc vất vả.
Tết Nguyên Đán được bắt đầu vào lúc giao thừa. Giao là bàn giao lại những gì đã cũ. Thừa là tiếp nhận cái gì mới mẻ. Giao thừa nghĩa là cũ giao lại, mới tiếp lấy. Chính vì thế mà hàng năm vào lúc giao tiếp của năm cũ và năm mới lại có lễ trừ tịch. Trừ tịch là giờ phút cuối cùng của năm cũ để sang năm mới. Lễ trừ tịch cử hành vào lúc giao thừa nên còn gọi là lễ Giao thừa.
Lễ Giao thừa được mọi gia đình chuẩn bị một cách trang nghiêm, tươm tất, trịnh trọng. Vì trong giờ phút thiêng liêng này người ta cầu mong sao cho một năm mới gia đình đầy hạnh phúc. Lễ này rất quan trọng trong truyền thuyết nhân gian, người ta tin rằng cứ mỗi năm là có một vị Hành khiển, Hành binh và Phán quan. Những vị này thừa lệnh Ngọc Hoàng để cai trị nhân gian trong năm (đương niên chi thần). Tất nhiên. những vị thần này cũng có những vị hiền từ, đức độ, cũng có những vị nghiêm khắc, quan liêu… Do đó, tục truyền nếu năm nào được vị đức độ thì thần dân sống an cư lạc nghiệp, bằng ngược lại… Theo truyền thuyết thì năm 2021 – năm Tân Sửu là vị thần Triệu Vương Hành khiển, Tam Thập lục thương Hành binh và Khúc Tào Phán quan.
Con người từ xa xưa đã hình thành cho mình những sức tưởng tượng vô cùng đa dạng, phong phú và đầy tính nhân văn. Có lẽ đứng trước vũ trụ bao la, mênh mông bất tận, con người rất cần đến sự che chở bằng một ý niệm thiêng liêng nào đó, và có thể chính vì thế mà thần linh bắt đầu hiện diện trong tư tưởng của họ. Theo tôi, con người không bi quan, bất lực trước cái mà họ tưởng tượng ra, mà đây là sự mưu cầu cái thiện, cái hoàn hảo.
Phải nói ông bà xưa đã để lại biết bao di sản văn hóa cao đẹp cho thế hệ con cháu ngày nay. Ngoài những tập tục lễ nghi, như: rước ông bà, lễ đón giao thừa… còn để lại cho dân tộc Việt Nam chiếc áo dài duyên dáng. Vào những ngày lễ hội và ngày Tết cổ truyền với chiếc áo dài kín đáo đã làm cho người phụ nữ Việt Nam tăng thêm sức quyến rũ. Ngày đầu xuân, những chiếc áo dài thướt tha, màu sắc của các chị, các em đến chùa dâng hương lễ Phật và hái lộc đầu năm góp phần tạo nên bức tranh sống động cho mùa xuân. Giá trị đẹp của chiếc áo dài phụ nữ Việt Nam đã làm rung động nhà sử học nữ người Mỹ J. Stésron khi nhìn và mặc chiếc áo dài Bà phát biểu: Xin cho phép tôi được mặc chiếc áo dài của người mẹ Việt Nam, người mẹ đã sinh ra những anh hùng của nhiều thời đại chống ngoại xâm bảo vệ Tổ quốc thân yêu của mình. Và ngày nay có một người mẹ đã sinh ra thiên tài Hồ Chủ tịch, Bà cũng mặc tà áo này. Hôm nay tôi mặc tà áo này không phải chưng cái sang trọng của người Việt Nam tặng cho tôi, đây là sự ngưỡng mộ một sắc phục dân tộc, mà chưa có một sắc phục phụ nữ nào lại đẹp, có văn hoá và bề dày truyền thống về thanh lịch như chiếc áo dài Việt Nam… Những chiếc áo dài tuyệt đẹp tôi như bị thôi miên, đứng nhìn ngây ngất trước những tà áo dài mềm mại trên thân hình rất đẹp của người phụ nữ Việt Nam. Trong khi đó, một cảm giác buồn tương phản khi tôi nhìn thấy nhiều chị em khác mặc những bộ đồ mà người phụ nữ Mỹ chúng tôi đã ném đi từ thập kỷ 60 sang thập kỷ 70 không dám mặc vì xấu hổ…
Những giá trị cao quý của tổ tiên đã để lại nếu chúng ta lãng quên hay đánh mất đi thì thật là đáng tiếc. Một dân tộc trường tồn và phát triển là một dân tộc lưu giữ được bản sắc. Giá trị này đã được Đức Phật nêu lên qua bảy yếu tố quan trọng để xây dựng một quốc gia hùng mạnh khi dạy vua A-xà-thế không nên cất binh xâm chiếm nước Bạt – Kỳ, vì nước này có bảy yếu tố:
1. Thường hội họp nhau để giải quyết vấn đề chung của quốc gia;
2. Đoàn kết thuận hòa với nhau;
3. Thi hành đúng theo pháp luật chế định;
4. Tôn kính bậc trưởng thượng;
5. Kính nể hàng phụ nữ;
6. Bảo tồn các đền thờ và tập tục cao quý;
7. Sùng bái các bậc tiền nhân.
Đạo Phật là đạo đem niềm vui, hạnh phúc đến cho mọi người, mà nhất là đối với dân tộc Việt Nam đã có chiều dài gắn bó với niềm tin và vận mệnh của dân tộc. Do đó, mùa xuân đến là niềm vui lớn của cả dân tộc, thì tất nhiên đạo Phật cũng hòa nhập vào niềm vui chung của con người đất Việt.
Vua Trần Nhân Tông (trị vì 1278-1293) là một vị minh quân. Ngài là người có công lớn trong công cuộc giữ nước, và đã đánh đuổi quân Nguyên – Mông giành độc lập cho dân tộc, làm rạng danh cho đất Việt. Về sau Ngài xuất gia và đã trở thành một Thiền sư “Giác Hoàng Điều Ngự” – Sơ Tổ thiền phái Trúc Lâm Yên Tử. Khi mùa xuân đến Ngài đón xuân bằng cái nhìn của một ông hoàng liễu đạo.
“Thuở bé chưa từng rõ sắc không,
Xuân đến muôn hoa nở trong lòng.
Chúa xuân nay bị ta khám phá,
Chiu trải giường thiền ngắm cảnh hồng”.
Ngày đầu năm, theo quan niệm của thế gian, là ngày đầy ý nghĩa và hứa hẹn những thành tựu tốt đẹp trong một năm. Trần Nhân Tông trong cái nhìn thời khắc đầu năm của ông là an vui, tự chủ, không bị dao động trước những cảnh vật bên ngoài. Đây là những gì mà ông đạt được từ khi còn là ông vua trẻ thọ giáo và hấp thụ tư tưởng của Tuệ Trung Thượng sĩ. Do đó, suốt cả năm và cả cuộc đời của ông sẽ mãi mãi là mùa xuân, mãi mãi là con người tự chủ, độc lập và không lay chuyển với buồn vui của ngoại cảnh.
Đạo Phật luôn chan chứa niềm vui. Những niềm vui đó nó xuất phát từ tâm hồn giải thoát. Cái vui ở đây không chỉ ở mùa xuân mà là cái vui muôn thuở, điều này đã được thể hiện qua Ngài Thanh Viễn Thiền sư khi đón xuân:
Ngày xuân xuân trong núi,
Việc xuân thảy đều xuân,
Chỉ có người biết xuân,
Muôn kiếp một mùa xuân.
Một khi tâm hồn ta có niềm vui an lạc thì tất cả đâu đâu cũng là xuân. Cảnh xuân, khách xuân, tình xuân…, tất cả cái vui xuân này nó chỉ có ở người biết được xuân.
Mùa xuân mà đầu năm chúng ta đi lễ Phật, nhà chùa gọi là xuân Di Lặc, cái nụ cười muôn thuở, tươi đẹp cả bầu trời. Muốn như vậy không gì hơn chúng ta phải sống không lệ thuộc vào khen, chê ở bên ngoài, không bị chi phối bởi lục căn tiếp xúc với lục trần. Tinh thần này sẽ giúp cho ta không bị choáng ngợp trước cám dỗ phù phiếm, xa hoa của trần thế như Giác Hoàng Điều Ngự đã mô tả qua bài thơ Mạn hứng ở Sơn phòng:
“Phải trái rụng theo hoa buổi sớm,
Lợi danh lạnh với trận mưa đêm,
Hoa tàn, mưa tạnh, non im lắng,
Xuân cỗi còn dư một tiếng chim”.
