1. BƯỚC NGOẶC CỦA KHOA HỌC: TỪ XÁC ĐỊNH ĐỀN BẤT ĐỊNH
Năm 1927, Werner Heisenberg [1], một nhà vật lý trẻ vốn là fan hâm mộ của Albert Einstein (đã được truyền cảm hứng từ cha đẻ của thuyết tương đối để từ đó theo đuổi con đường vật lý [2]), đã công bố công trình được xem là một trong những khám phá khoa học vĩ đại nhất thế kỷ XX, nó thậm chí khiến cho ngay chính thần tượng của ông, tức thiên tài Einstein, phải mất cả phần đời còn lại để suy tư mà vẫn không thể chấp nhận [3]: Đó là nguyên lý bất định trong vật lý lượng tử (uncertainty principle).
Nguyên lý này có thể được phát biểu giản đơn cho đại chúng rằng, ta không thể đồng thời xác định được vị trí và vận tốc của một lượng tử, một khi ta xác định càng chính xác giá trị của đại lượng này thì lại càng xác định sai lệch giá trị của đại lượng kia [4]. Erwin Schrodinger [5] đã mô tả nguyên lý trên bằng một thí nghiệm tưởng tượng nổi tiếng về sau được gọi tên là “Con mèo của Schrodinger”, với hình ảnh một chú mèo đại diện cho những hạt hạ nguyên tử (subatomic particles) được nhốt bên trong chiếc hộp có lọ thuốc độc. Chú mèo khi ấy sẽ có trạng thái 50:50 vừa sống, vừa chết cho đến khi nào ta mở chiếc hộp ra, cũng tương tự những hạt lượng tử vừa hiện diện, vừa không hiện diện, tức vừa có vừa không có một vị trí hoặc một tốc độ xác định, cho đến khi ta tiến hành một phép đo đạc [6]. Điều này còn ngụ ý rằng hành vi quan sát của người quan sát đã tạo nên kết quả quan sát; cũng tức là nói, khi ta tiến hành xác định một hiện tượng, tự ta cũng đã can thiệp làm biến đổi hiện tượng đó. Phải chăng, với vật lý lượng tử, khoa học không phải tri thức khách quan, xác định, mà chỉ là thứ tri thức chủ quan và ngẫu nhiên như điều Einstein chất vấn: “Có phải mặt trăng chỉ tồn tại khi tôi nhìn lên nó?” [7].
2. PHẢN ĐỐI CỦA EINSTEIN VÀ SỰ LY KHAI HAI ĐƯỜNG LỐI TRI NHẬN THỰC TẠI
Quan niệm ấy về trạng thái bất định lượng tử đã khiến cho “nhà vật lý cổ điển cuối cùng” [8] Albert Einstein không chấp nhận được và liên tục nêu những quan điểm thách thức, phản biện [9] chính thứ lý thuyết mà bản thân ông là người đặt nền móng. Điều thú vị là những ngộ nhận của Einstein trong quá trình phản đối và tranh luận về thuyết lượng tử đã góp phần mở ra những chân trời mới cho học thuyết còn non trẻ này, chính những chất vấn căn cơ của một bậc thầy vật lý thiên tài như Einstein mới làm được điều kỳ diệu: “Dùng cái sai để hoàn thiện cái đúng” [10]. Thí nghiệm tưởng tượng EPR nổi tiếng của Einstein cùng 02 cộng sự [11] chính là một trong những “sai lầm vĩ đại” ấy, dù đã bị Niels Bohr [12] – cha đẻ của thuyết lượng tử – phản biện một cách tài tình, nó cũng đã giúp các nhà vật lý lượng tử hiểu rõ và mô tả cặn kẽ hơn hiện tượng chồng chập/vướng víu lượng tử (quantum entanglement) [13].
Sự phản đối của Einstein đối với thuyết lượng tử không chỉ đại diện cho sự phân đôi của hai trụ cột vật lý hiện đại là thuyết tương đối – thuyết mô tả chính xác những cái “vô cùng lớn” của những vì sao và thiên hà, phát hiện của Einstein – và thuyết lượng tử (học thuyết về những cái vô cùng bé của những hạt hạ-nguyên tử) do Niels Bohr, W. Heisenberg là những nhà sáng lập mà sự phân đôi ấy còn đại biểu cho sự ly khai hai đường lối tư duy khoa học, hai cách nhìn về thế giới tự nhiên: Một bên tìm kiếm sự tất nhiên và xác định (Einstein làm Đại biểu) và một bên thừa nhận sự ngẫu nhiên và bất định (tức quan điểm của những vật lý gia lượng tử).
Lập trường của Einstein cũng như của những khoa học gia chủ trương sự tất định cho rằng “Chúa không chơi trò xúc xắc” và xem việc thừa nhận tính ngẫu nhiên, bất tất chẳng qua chỉ là cách nói để che đậy cho sự bất lực, thiếu hiểu biết trước điều gì đó nan giải [14]. Nhưng giới vật lý lượng tử không phải không cố công tìm kiếm những quy luật xác định, họ chỉ cho rằng đã chứng minh được thế giới vi mô có những hành xử theo quy luật khác hẳn thế giới vĩ mô mà ta sống trong đó. Do đó, những hạt lượng tử vẫn tuân theo các quy luật, nhưng cố nhiên là những quy luật phản trực giác và xa lạ với kinh nghiệm của con người. Vì thế, thậm chí đến Richard Feynman, một trong những nhà vật lý lượng tử xuất chúng nhất, cũng phải lên tiếng rằng: “Tôi nghĩ không ai có thể hiểu được thuyết lượng tử” [15].
Ngay khi vật lý học hiện đại phân đôi thành hai trụ cột, cũng là khi các nhà vật lý khởi sự tìm kiếm giải pháp hợp nhất, tức một “Lý thuyết về vạn vật” (Theory of everything) hay “Lý thuyết thống nhất lớn” (The grand unified theory), một “công thức” thống nhất có thể mô tả chính xác, đồng thời cả những cái vô cùng lớn lẫn những cái vô cùng bé. Câu hỏi sơ khởi chính là làm thế nào mọi thứ có thể vừa tất yếu lại vừa ngẫu nhiên? Hay rằng, làm sao một thứ có thể vừa có đó lại vừa không có đó, vừa ở đây, lại vừa ở kia?
3. NỀN VẬT LÝ CỦA SỰ NGẪU NHIÊN VÀ BẤT ĐỊNH TRONG CUỘC GẶP GỠ VỚI NHẬN THỨC PHẬT GIÁO
Đó là khi tri kiến sắc – không hay nhận thức vô phân biệt của Phật giáo trở nên đồng điệu với lý tưởng tìm kiếm một chân lý khoa học thống nhất. Nghịch lý EPR của Einstein và hai cộng sự đặt vấn đề rằng thuyết lượng tử đã tự mâu thuẫn khi cho rằng hai hạt quang tử (photon) A và B tuy ở rất xa nhau, không thể “truyền tin” cho nhau mà lại có thể hành xử tương ứng với nhau như thể vẫn đang “giữ liên lạc”. Với cách nhìn ấy, Einstein một cách chủ ý hoặc vô tình đã rơi vào thứ “chủ nghĩa hiện thực cục bộ” (local realism), cho rằng mỗi bộ phận thực tại là một phần tử tách rời, độc lập, do đó mỗi hạt lượng tử phải có một toạ độ và quỹ đạo chuyển động xác định, tức có một “định xứ” và khi đã tách rời nhau thì không thể có liên hệ với nhau [16]. Trong khi cơ học lượng tử bác bỏ tính “định xứ” của thế giới lượng tử. Nói cách khác, hiện thực lượng tử là một chỉnh thể nhất thống và mỗi hạt quang tử A hoặc B là một phần tử liền lạc trong chỉnh thể ấy, không thể bị tách rời, nên chúng không bao giờ “đứt liên lạc” với nhau.
Hiện thực đó có thể liên hệ đến lý Duyên khởi của nhà Phật: Có A là vì có B, A không là A nếu B chẳng là B [17]. Hoặc nói như trí tuệ dân gian: Sinh con rồi mới sinh cha, tức rằng cha chỉ là cha khi có con hiện diện và ngược lại. Sự phân biệt A và B, hay cha và con, theo đó phải được hiểu đơn thuần chỉ là sự phân biệt mang tính công cụ, không khác gì sự phân biệt hai đầu của một sợi dây hay hai mặt của một đồng tiền. Tất cả là những mảng không thể tách rời của một tổng thể hiện thực đan xen nối liền trong cái mà Đạo Phật gọi là trùng trùng duyên khởi, tạo nên tính chất tương tức, tương liên, tương thuộc của vạn hữu, khiến cho ta không thể tác động đến cái này mà không tạo nên biến đổi ít nhiều trong cái kia [18]. Mà từ tri kiến ấy, ta cũng có thể thấy được thứ hiện thực được phát hiện và mô tả gần đây trong “thuyết hỗn độn” (chaosism) với ví dụ điển hình về “hiệu ứng cánh bướm” (butterfly effect): Một con bướm đập cánh tại Brazil có thể gây nên một cơn bão giữa Thái Bình Dương.
Phật giáo vốn dĩ không hề ôm ấp tham vọng cung cấp một luận thuyết khoa học. Đạo Phật cũng không có nhiệm vụ thay thế câu trả lời của các nhà khoa học cho những phép đo, những phép suy luận đúc kết thành quy luật vận hành của thế giới tự nhiên. Đức Phật và Đạo Phật chỉ có sứ mệnh quan tâm đến con người, tìm kiếm quy luật của kiếp người để đề xuất giải pháp cho những vấn đề của nhân loại, để giải thoát nhân sinh khỏi nỗi khổ niềm đau và xác định con đường đưa đến hạnh phúc, an lạc. Nhưng con người vẫn sống trong thế giới tự nhiên và giới tự nhiên không thể là chính nó nếu không có con người. Sự đồng điệu hay gặp gỡ giữa Phật giáo và khoa học. Vì vậy, sự hội ngộ tất yếu: Hiểu biết về con người chính là hiểu biết về tự nhiên, vạn hữu và ngược lại, không có thứ tri thức nào về thế giới tự nhiên lại tách rời tri thức về con người. Chính từ mối liên hệ ấy, ta thấy luôn có cánh cửa để Đạo Phật gợi ý cho các nhà khoa học về cách nhìn thế giới; khoa học cũng có thể dùng tri thức của mình đóng góp cho nhân sinh, lẫn cho sự tu tập và hành trì Đạo Phật của các Tu sĩ.
Cái nhìn không phân biệt và nhận thức sự tương tức tương thuộc của vạn vật nơi Đạo Phật, vì một cơ duyên đặc biệt, đã đồng thời trở thành cốt lõi của tư duy khoa học hiện đại. Như Đức Đạt-lai-lạt-ma một lần từng hỏi nhà vật lý học trứ danh David Bohm rằng: “Từ cái nhìn khoa học hiện đại, sẽ có gì bất ổn nếu ta khăng khăng tin vào sự độc lập cố hữu của bản thân và vạn vật chung quanh?”. Bohm đã trả lời dứt khoát: Cũng như những học thuyết chủ trương chia rẽ con người, như thuyết phân biệt chủng tộc, thuyết phân biệt giai cấp, tất cả đều bắt nguồn từ cội rễ của tư duy phân mảnh, tách rời, xem nhân loại như những phần biệt lập của những quốc gia, chủng tộc, giai cấp, chứ không hề là một chỉnh thể cố kết. Những thảm họa trong lịch sử luôn bắt nguồn từ lối tư duy ấy [19].
4. LƯỢNG TỬ VÀ THIỀN QUÁN
Ở Làng Mai, Thiền sư Nhất Hạnh đã khởi xướng một pháp môn Thiền quán gọi là “phép địa xúc” (earth touching), xuất phát từ hình ảnh Đức Phật Thích Ca trong đêm Thành đạo đã chạm tay vào mặt đất để đề nghị một sự xác chứng cho hiện thực giác ngộ của Ngài [20]. Đất Mẹ – Mother Earth – trong cái nhìn của phép quán Làng Mai và có lẽ cũng tương ứng với cái nhìn của Đức Phật trong đêm Thành đạo, là đại diện của muôn loài, của mọi cõi, của vô tận sinh linh trong quá khứ bao gồm cả muôn kiếp các bậc Hiền nhân, Tổ tiên, thậm chí của đời chư Phật quá khứ. Đó là ý nghĩa của phép quán địa xúc, cũng như của sự thực hành lễ lạy khi gieo năm vóc thân mình xuống đất: Sự ấn chứng của “Đất Mẹ” là sự ấn chứng tròn đầy, viên mãn nhất; cũng đồng thời từ sự ấn chứng ấy, cho ta cảm nhận đủ đầy nhất mối liên hệ giữa ta với toàn vẹn cõi sống, với vạn vật sinh linh và muôn đời Tổ tiên. Ta thấy mình là một phần không thể tách rời trong dòng truyền thừa nối dài từ bất tận thời gian; và là một mảnh ghép tất yếu trong khoảng vô biên không gian của cõi sống. Bởi thế, làm sao có một cái ngã (self) riêng biệt nào, khi mỗi cá nhân luôn là liên – cá nhân?
Từ tri kiến sắc – không nhìn về vật lý học lượng tử, ta thấy rằng nếu trong nhận thức Phật giáo, đặc tính vô thường của vạn pháp là điều duy nhất thường hằng; thì trong vật lý hiện đại, chính tính bất định của thế giới lượng tử là điều tất định duy nhất. Nhưng lạ thay, khi chấp nhận điều đó rồi thì mọi phân biệt thường – vô thường; bất định – tất định, chẳng còn ý nghĩa gì nữa. Chỉ có một cõi sống mang đặc tính đại đồng và bình đẳng được tạo nên từ sự gắn kết tương liên giữa vạn hữu, vẫn đang tiếp diễn, vẫn đang trôi chảy.
