Tóm tắt: Hồ Chí Minh – vị lãnh tụ thiên tài, người thầy vĩ đại của Cách mạng Việt Nam, anh hùng giải phóng dân tộc, danh nhân văn hóa thế giới, đã hiến dâng trọn đời mình cho sự nghiệp đấu tranh giải phóng dân tộc, xây dựng và bảo vệ Tổ quốc. Người đã làm rạng rỡ dân tộc ta, Nhân dân ta và non sông đất nước ta [1]. Hồ Chí Minh đã để lại hệ thống tư tưởng có giá trị, trong đó có tư tưởng về Phật giáo.
Nội dung tư tưởng Hồ Chí Minh về Phật giáo có nội dung phong phú, đa dạng nhưng có thể khái quát ở những nội dung cơ bản sau:
1. THẤM ĐƯỢM TINH THẦN TỪ BI HỶ XẢ, CỨU KHỔ, CỨU NẠN, MƯU CẦU HẠNH PHÚC, AN LẠC CHO NHÂN DÂN
Cuộc đời Hồ Chí Minh là kết tinh của tinh hoa văn hoá dân tộc Việt Nam. Trong đó, có nhiều yếu tố Phật giáo [2] với tư tưởng vị tha, cứu khổ, cứu nạn, mưu cầu hạnh phúc, an lành cho con người, bình an cho xã hội, nhất là việc xác định con đường diệt khổ. Đức Phật dạy: “Này A nan! Hãy tự mình làm hòn đảo cho chính mình và tự nương tựa chính mình. Hãy lấy Pháp làm hòn đảo, làm nơi nương tựa, đừng lấy nơi nào khác làm nơi nương tựa, làm hòn đảo, đừng nương tựa nơi nào khác” [3]. Hồ Chí Minh cũng nhấn mạnh: “Muốn người ta giúp cho, thì trước hết phải tự giúp lấy mình đã” [4], “Toàn quốc đồng bào hãy đứng dậy đem sức ta mà tự giải phóng cho ta” [5]. Như vậy, giữa Đức Phật và Hồ Chí Minh đều coi trọng sức mạnh bản thân và trước hết cần phải chính bản thân mình thực hiện thành công mục tiêu đề ra trước khi trông chờ vào sự giúp đỡ của người khác.
Cùng với việc răn dạy các đệ tử về trách nhiệm của bản thân trên con đường diệt khổ, Đức Phật còn là tấm gương sáng cho tinh thần từ bi hỷ xả, vô ngã vị tha, cứu khổ cứu nạn vì đã hy sinh bản thân đấu tranh diệt lũ ác ma. Đức Phật xuất hiện trên cuộc đời này để “Đem lại hạnh phúc cho đa số, an lạc cho đa số, vì lòng thương tưởng cho đời, vì lợi ích, vì hạnh phúc, vì an lạc cho chư Thiên và loài Người” [6] và “Chỉ nói lên sự khổ và sự diệt khổ” [7]. Hồ Chí Minh cũng hiến dâng trọn đời mình để xây dựng cuộc sống ấm no, hạnh phúc cho Nhân dân, độc lập cho đất nước: “Tôi chỉ có một sự ham muốn, ham muốn tột bậc, là làm sao cho nước ta được hoàn toàn độc lập, dân ta được hoàn toàn tự do, đồng bào ai cũng có cơm ăn áo mặc, ai cũng được học hành” [8]. Một ngày mà Tổ quốc chưa thống nhất, đồng bào còn chịu khổ là một ngày Tôi ăn không ngon, ngủ không yên. Điều này giống với “Hạnh vô ngã” của Đạo Phật, không nghĩ đến bản thân mình, luôn quên mình vì mọi người.

Trên con đường tìm đến hạnh phúc an lạc, cả Đức Phật và Hồ Chí Minh đều đặc biệt coi trọng vai trò của Nhân dân. Nếu như triết lý của Phật giáo khẳng định “Nhân thị tối thắng” – con người cao hơn tất cả, thì Hồ Chí Minh lại nhấn mạnh: “Trong bầu trời không gì quý bằng Nhân dân. Trong thế giới không gì mạnh bằng lực lượng đoàn kết của Nhân dân” [9]. Do đó, không có gì tốt đẹp, vẻ vang bằng phục vụ lợi ích cho dân, việc gì có lợi cho dân phải hết sức làm, việc gì có hại cho dân phải hết sức tránh.
Khi thực dân Pháp đốt chùa chiền, phá tượng Phật, hành hạ Tăng, Ni, tàn sát Phật tử hòng phá tan Đạo Phật [10], Hồ Chí Minh đã lãnh đạo Nhân dân kháng chiến đến cùng để cứu quốc dân ra khỏi khổ nạn, để giữ quyền thống nhất và độc lập của Tổ quốc. Thế là chúng ta làm theo lòng đại từ, đại bi của Đức Phật Thích Ca, kháng chiến để đưa giống nòi ra khỏi khổ ải nô lệ [11]. Với Người, “Chân lý là cái gì có lợi cho Tổ quốc, cho Nhân dân. Cái gì trái với lợi ích của Tổ quốc, của Nhân dân tức là không phải chân lý. Ra sức phụng sự Tổ quốc, phục vụ Nhân dân, tức là phục tùng chân lý” [12]. Phát biểu tại lễ mừng Liên Hiệp Quốc ngày 05/01/1946, Hồ Chí Minh nhấn mạnh: “Dân muốn gì, ta phải làm nấy”. Nói hy sinh phấn đấu thì dễ, nhưng làm thì khó. Trước Phật đài tôn nghiêm, trước quốc dân đồng bào có mặt tại đây, Tôi xin thề hy sinh đem thân phấn đấu để giữ vững nền độc lập cho Tổ quốc. Hy sinh, nếu cần đến hy sinh cả tính mạng, Tôi cũng không từ [13]. Điều này rất gần với chân lý chỉ ra nỗi khổ và con đường diệt khổ của Phật giáo. Nhờ đó, Người đã thức tỉnh được lòng trắc ẩn, đại từ đại bi cứu khổ cứu nạn của Đức Phật cho đồng bào Phật tử và kêu gọi họ đoàn kết cùng Nhân dân đấu tranh bảo vệ nền độc lập, hoà bình của đất nước.

hạnh phúc, vì an lạc cho chư Thiên và loài Người” và “chỉ nói lên sự khổ
và sự diệt khổ”.
Tôn chỉ, mục đích của Đạo Phật là xây dựng cuộc đời thuần mỹ, chí thiện, bình đẳng, yên vui và no ấm [14], đã được Hồ Chí Minh nâng lên thành truyền thống yêu nước, nhân văn của dân tộc và động viên đồng bào Phật tử về lòng yêu thương con người, quên mình vì mọi người, mình vì người khác… để xây dựng đất nước. Người nhấn mạnh mục đích của công cuộc chủ nghĩa xã hội là: “…làm cho Nhân dân lao động thoát nạn bần cùng, làm cho mọi người có công ăn việc làm, được ấm no và sống một đời hạnh phúc, …là làm sao cho dân giàu nước mạnh [15], … làm sao cho Nhân dân đủ ăn, đủ mặc, ngày càng sung sướng, ai nấy được đi học, ốm đau có thuốc, già không lao động được thì nghỉ, những phong tục tập quán không tốt dần dần được xóa bỏ [16]… mọi người được áo ấm, cơm no, nhà ở tử tế, được học hành [17], …tất cả mọi người các dân tộc ngày càng ấm no, con cháu chúng ta ngày càng sung sướng…” [18].
Khi ở cương vị Chủ tịch nước, Người luôn dành thời gian đi thăm nhiều chùa và cơ sở Phật giáo như: Chùa Hương, chùa Một Cột, chùa Quán Sứ, chùa Thầy, chùa Trầm, chùa Côn Sơn, đền Ngọc Sơn, đền Hùng, Kiếp Bạc, Cổ Loa… để thắp hương tưởng niệm Đức Phật, các bậc Thần linh, anh hùng chiến sĩ; tiếp xúc với nhiều Tăng, Ni, Phật tử và cùng với các nhà Sư “Ra sức cầu Phật cho kháng chiến chóng thành công để đất nước mạnh giàu, Nhân dân an lạc” [19]. “Phật giáo với dân tộc như bóng với hình. Dân tộc bị nô lệ dưới chế độ thực dân thì người Phật giáo cũng bị lầm than khổ sở. Do sự liên quan mật thiết giữa Phật giáo và dân tộc Việt Nam, nên khi Nguyễn Ái Quốc xuất hiện đấu tranh giành độc lập trên chính trường quốc tế thì cả dân tộc Việt Nam, trong đó có người Phật giáo, đều hướng về sự lãnh đạo của Người” [20]. Nước có độc lập thì Đạo Phật mới dễ mở mang, từ đó, nhiều người sẽ có cơ hội tiếp nhận đạo lý tinh thần mà Phật giáo truyền trao.
Như vậy, cả Ðức Phật và Hồ Chí Minh đều thấm đượm tinh thần từ bi hỷ xả, cứu khổ cứu nạn; đề cao vai trò của Nhân dân; chỉ ra nguyên nhân và con đường diệt khổ để đi đến hạnh phúc an lạc cho mọi người; đồng thời, đưa ra nguyên tắc sống để mọi người nương vào đó thực hiện.
2. HỒ CHÍ MINH CHỦ TRƯƠNG ĐOÀN KẾT PHẬT GIÁO VỚI CÁC TÔN GIÁO KHÁC TRONG XÂY DỰNG VÀ BẢO VỆ TỔ QUỐC
Đạo Phật nổi tiếng với tư tưởng “Lục hoà” (Thân hòa đồng trụ (cùng hòa đồng khi ở chung). Khẩu hòa vô tránh (miệng nói cùng hòa hợp nhau, không gây gổ, không nói lời dữ, lời nặng nề, không tranh hơn thua với nhau). Ý hòa đồng duyệt (ý của những thành viên trong cộng đồng hòa hợp, vui vẻ với nhau). Kiến hòa đồng giải (chia sẻ những thấy biết của mình). Giới hòa đồng tu (cùng giữ giới hạnh đối với nhau để cùng an vui tu tập). Lợi hòa đồng quân (có được lợi thì cùng chia đồng đều cho nhau))… Do đó, khi du nhập vào nước ta, tư tưởng “Lục hòa” rất phù hợp với truyền thống đoàn kết của dân tộc Việt Nam, nên nhanh chóng bám rễ sâu vào đời sống Nhân dân và được Hồ Chí Minh phát huy cao độ. Trong đó, Hồ Chí Minh dành sự quan tâm đặc biệt đến việc xây dựng khối đoàn kết giữa Phật giáo với các tôn giáo khác nhằm thực hiện thành công các nhiệm vụ chính trị đề ra.
Để Cách mạng giành thắng lợi thì người giàu, người nghèo, quý tộc và nông dân, Hồi giáo và Phật giáo, đều hợp sức đoàn kết [21]. Do đó, ngày 19/5/1941, Người quyết định thành lập Hội Việt Nam Độc lập Đồng minh (Mặt trận Việt Minh) với các Hội Cứu quốc, như: Phật giáo Cứu quốc, Công nhân Cứu quốc, Nông dân Cứu quốc, Thanh niên Cứu quốc, Phụ nữ Cứu quốc, Phụ lão Cứu quốc, Nhi đồng Cứu quốc… để chống kẻ thù chính của dân tộc Việt Nam lúc ấy là thực dân Pháp và phát xít Nhật [22]. Người nhấn mạnh: “Việt Nam Độc lập Đồng minh, không phải là một đảng mà là một mặt trận toàn dân, bao gồm các đảng phái (Đảng Dân chủ, phái Xã hội), các phần tử Quốc dân Đảng, Đảng Cộng sản (đã tự động giải tán) và các đoàn thể yêu nước không đảng phái như: Hội Thanh niên Cứu quốc, Hội Phật giáo Cứu quốc, Hội Cơ đốc giáo Cứu quốc…” [23]. Như vậy, Hội Phật giáo Cứu quốc là một thành viên quan trọng của Mặt trận Việt Minh và cần tăng cường đoàn kết với các tổ chức tôn giáo khác để sự nghiệp đấu tranh giải phóng dân tộc đến thành công.
Với giác quan chính trị nhạy bén và sự mẫn cảm kiệt xuất, Hồ Chí Minh thấy rõ Phật giáo là một điểm tựa vững chắc để xây dựng khối đại đoàn kết toàn dân đấu tranh giành độc lập dân tộc, đem lại cuộc sống ấm no, hạnh phúc cho con người. Người nhấn mạnh: “… Phật giáo Việt Nam với dân tộc như hình với bóng, tuy hai mà một. Tôi mong các Hòa thượng, Tăng, Ni và Phật tử hãy tích cực thực hiện tinh thần Từ bi, Vô ngã, Vị tha trong sự nghiệp cứu nước, giữ nước và giữ đạo để cùng toàn dân sống trong Ðộc lập, Tự do, Hạnh phúc”. “Tôi kính cẩn cầu nguyện Đức Phật bảo hộ Tổ quốc và đồng bào ta và Tôi gửi lời thân ái chào các vị trong Hội Phật tử. Từ ngày nước ta trở nên Dân chủ Cộng hoà, Hiến pháp ta tôn trọng tự do tín ngưỡng, thì Phật giáo cũng phát triển một cách thuận tiện” [24].
Phát biểu tại lễ mừng Liên Hiệp Quốc gia ngày 05/01/1946, Hồ Chí Minh khẳng định: “Nước Phật ngày xưa có những 04 đảng phái làm ly tán lòng dân và hại Tổ quốc. Nhưng nước Việt Nam ngày nay chỉ có 01 đảng phái là toàn dân quyết tâm giành độc lập. Tín đồ Phật giáo tin ở Phật; tín đồ Giatô tin ở Đức Chúa Trời; cũng như chúng ta tin ở Đạo Khổng. Đó là những vị chí tôn nên chúng ta tin tưởng” [25]. “Mục đích cao cả của Phật Thích Ca và Chúa Giêsu đều giống nhau, Thích Ca và Giêsu đều muốn mọi người có cơm ăn, áo mặc, bình đẳng, tự do và thế giới đại đồng”. “Chúa Giêsu dạy đạo đức là bác ái. Phật Thích Ca dạy: Đạo đức là từ bi. Khổng Tử dạy: Đạo đức là bác ái”.
Khi chính quyền Ngô Đình Diệm thi hành chính sách kỳ thị tôn giáo, chia cắt lâu dài nước ta, Hồ Chí Minh kêu gọi Tăng, Ni và đồng bào Phật tử: Đã đoàn kết thì càng đoàn kết hơn để góp phần xây dựng hoà bình chóng thắng lợi. Hãy ra sức giúp đỡ cán bộ, hăng hái thực hiện mọi công tác của Chính phủ, chấp hành đúng chính sách tôn trọng tự do tín ngưỡng, ngăn chặn âm mưu của Mỹ – Diệm và bọn tay sai lợi dụng tôn giáo hòng chia rẽ khối đoàn kết toàn dân, hãy ra sức đấu tranh giành thống nhất đất nước [26].
3. HỒ CHÍ MINH ĐÁNH GIÁ CAO NHỮNG ĐÓNG GÓP CỦA TĂNG, NI, PHẬT TỬ TRONG SỰ NGHIỆP ĐẤU TRANH GIẢI PHÓNG DÂN TỘC VÀ XÂY DỰNG ĐẤT NƯỚC
Phật giáo luôn đồng hành cùng dân tộc và có những đóng góp quan trọng đối với sự phát triển của đất nước. “Nhìn lại lịch sử dân tộc và lịch sử Phật giáo kể từ khi được truyền vào nước ta, đều khẳng định trên cả hai phương diện dựng nước và giữ nước, cũng như đấu tranh chống bất công và cường quyền, Tăng, Ni và Phật tử Việt Nam đã khẳng định mình là một bộ phận gắn bó chặt chẽ với dân tộc, đã góp tiếng nói và công sức vào cuộc đấu tranh vì độc lập, tự do của Tổ quốc, vì cuộc sống và hạnh phúc của Nhân dân” [27].
Trước sự xâm lược của thực dân Pháp, Hồ Chí Minh vận động Nhân dân đoàn kết để tạo thành một làn sóng vô cùng mạnh mẽ, to lớn, nó lướt qua mọi sự nguy hiểm, khó khăn nhấn chìm tất cả lũ bán nước và cướp nước [28]. “Toàn thể dân tộc Việt Nam quyết đem tất cả tinh thần và lực lượng, tính mạng, của cải để giữ vững quyền tự do, độc lập ấy” [29]. Lực lượng Tăng, Ni và Phật tử tham gia tích cực vào công cuộc bảo vệ độc lập dân tộc vì không ai có thể đứng yên nhìn đất nước bị diệt vong. Nhằm tạo điều kiện thuận lợi cho Tăng, Ni và Phật tử tham gia phong trào yêu nước. Ngày 15/3/1946, Chủ tịch Hồ Chí Minh ký quyết định thành lập Hội Phật giáo Việt Nam, đặt trụ sở tại 73 phố Quán Sứ, Hà Nội. Chủ tịch Hồ Chí Minh cũng ghi nhận những đóng góp của Tăng, Ni và Phật tử trong cuộc kháng chiến và kiến quốc. Người mong đồng bào cố gắng cho đến ngày kháng chiến thắng lợi, nước nhà độc lập [30], Người khen ngợi các vị Tăng, Ni, tín đồ đã sẵn lòng nồng nàn yêu nước, hăng hái làm tròn nghĩa vụ của người công dân và xứng đáng là Phật tử…[31].
Để phản đối việc chính quyền Ngô Đình Diệm cấm treo cờ Phật giáo thế giới vào dịp lễ Phật đản năm 1963, ngày 11/6/1963, Hòa thượng Thích Quảng Đức tự thiêu tại Sài Gòn với hạnh nguyện: “Khói thơm cảnh tỉnh bao người ác, Tro trắng phẳng san hố bất bình”. Trước sự hy sinh phi thường và dũng cảm của Hòa thượng Thích Quảng Đức, Chủ tịch Hồ Chí Minh hết sức cảm động và có câu đối kính viếng Hòa thượng: “Vị pháp thiêu thân vạn cổ hùng huy thiên nhật nguyệt. Lưu danh bất tử bách niên chính khí địa sơn hà” [32].
Ngày 28/8/1963, Hồ Chí Minh lên án chính quyền Ngô Đình Diệm đàn áp dã man Tăng, Ni, Phật tử. Người viết: Bọn Ngô Đình Diệm đốt phá chùa chiền, khủng bố Sư sãi và đồng bào theo Đạo Phật… Tội ác của chúng, Nhân dân ta đều căm giận. Cả thế giới đều lên tiếng phản đối, Nhân dân tiến bộ Mỹ cũng tỏ lòng bất bình… Trước tình hình ấy, đồng bào miền Nam ta đã đoàn kết nhất trí, không phân biệt sĩ, nông, công, thương, không phân biệt chính kiến, tôn giáo, kiên quyết đấu tranh để giành lại tự do dân chủ, tự do tín ngưỡng và cảm ơn Nhân dân thế giới đã ủng hộ cuộc đấu tranh của Tăng Ni, Phật tử miền Nam chống chế độ bạo quyền Ngô Đình Diệm: “Thay mặt Nhân dân Việt Nam, Tôi chân thành cảm ơn Nhân dân và Chính phủ các nước Phật giáo, các nước Xã hội Chủ nghĩa anh em, cảm ơn Nhân dân yêu chuộng hòa bình và chính nghĩa trên thế giới, cảm ơn Nhân dân và nhân sĩ tiến bộ nước Mỹ đã nghiêm khắc lên án Mỹ – Diệm và nhiệt tình ủng hộ Nhân dân miền Nam” [33].
Hồ Chí Minh đánh giá cao những đóng góp, hy sinh của Tăng, Ni, tín đồ Phật giáo. Trong “Thư gửi Hội nghị Đại biểu Hội Phật giáo thống nhất Việt Nam” ngày 28/9/1964, Người nhấn mạnh: Các vị Tăng, Ni và tín đồ Phật giáo trước đây đã có công với kháng chiến, nay thì đang góp sức cùng toàn dân xây dựng miền Bắc giàu mạnh và đấu tranh thực hiện hòa bình thống nhất nước nhà. Nhân dịp này, Tôi thân ái gửi lời chúc mừng Hội nghị thành công tốt đẹp. Nhân đây, chúng ta tỏ lòng đoàn kết với đồng bào Phật giáo ở miền Nam đang hăng hái tham gia cuộc đấu tranh yêu nước và chống đế quốc Mỹ xâm lăng. Đồng bào Phật giáo cả nước, từ Bắc đến Nam, đều cố gắng thực hiện lời Phật dạy là: “Lợi lạc quần sinh, vô ngã vị tha”. Chúc toàn thể Tăng, Ni và đồng bào Phật giáo góp phần xứng đáng trong sự nghiệp xây dựng nước Việt Nam hòa bình, thống nhất, độc lập, dân chủ và giàu mạnh” [34].
