Giáo dục đạo đức học đường đang là vấn đề khiến cho cả ngành giáo dục phải trăn trở. Hiện tượng học sinh ở nhiều cấp lớp có biểu hiện chạy theo lối sống vật chất, ứng xử bằng bạo lực, tiêu cực trong thi cử, ích kỷ với cộng đồng và thờ ơ với các vấn đề thời cuộc… chính là những hồi chuông cảnh báo về sự suy thoái của đạo đức học đường.

Các phương tiện truyền thông đã phản ánh rất nhiều về hiện tượng sa sút đạo đức ở nhà trường và xã hội. Các mối quan hệ truyền thống vốn dĩ rất tốt đẹp đang dần dần bị băng hoại. Có thể thấy nhan nhản chuyện thầy đánh trò, trò đánh thầy, ứng xử bằng bạo lực từ nhà trường ra đến xã hội. Phải thừa nhận rằng một bộ phận học sinh có vấn đề về đạo đức.
Hoạt động giáo dục đạo đức vốn là công việc chung, đòi hỏi sự phối hợp từ ba phía gia đình – nhà trường – xã hội thì nay lại bị phó thác hoàn toàn cho nhà trường. Ở trường học, những môn đạo đức, giáo dục công dân thường ít được liên kết với quá trình trải nghiệm sáng tạo và học tập tình huống, đặc biệt là chưa có sự gắn kết với các môn học khoa học xã hội và nhân văn như lịch sử, văn chương…
Không phải chỉ có học sinh mới suy thoái đạo đức, đạo đức của nhiều đối tượng trong môi trường giáo dục cũng đang xuống cấp. Điều chúng ta thấy rõ nhất bây giờ là chuyện bảo mẫu đánh trẻ em không thương tiếc. Qua quan sát trên các phương tiện truyền thông, chúng ta sẽ thấy hết tất cả những biểu hiện này.
Giáo dục đạo đức trong nhà trường đang có lỗ hỏng. Những môn như giáo dục công dân không có đủ thời lượng để giảng dạy bài bản. Nhiều trường học còn cắt xén thời lượng để tập trung vào việc ôn thi. Các môn giáo dục đạo đức thường bị xem nhẹ so với các môn học khác.
Ở phương diện gia đình, việc giáo dục đạo đức cho con em cũng bị nhiều bậc phụ huynh xem nhẹ. Vì chạy theo đời sống kinh tế mà họ không dành thời gian dạy con, ăn cơm cùng con, trò chuyện cùng con. Thiếu đi tình yêu thương từ cái nôi gia đình, thử hỏi làm sao học sinh có thể hoàn thiện nhân cách. Ví như một hạt mầm khi được gieo xuống đất mà không ai chịu bỏ công chăm sóc thì kết quả chỉ là sự cằn cỗi.
Theo khảo sát do người viết bài tiến hành, đa số các em học sinh Trung học Phổ thông trên địa bàn thành phố Hồ Chí Minh nhận thức được truyền thống và đạo lý dân tộc, có lòng yêu nước, hiểu được tinh thần tương thân tương ái. Tuy nhiên, từ nhận thức đến thực hành lối sống còn một khoảng cách khá lớn.
Cụ thể:
Tỷ lệ các em nhận thức từ rõ đến rất rõ truyền thống yêu nước và giá trị lao động chiếm trên 60%. Nhưng mức độ đạt được thông qua hành động chỉ xấp xỉ 34-35%. Điều đáng nói là chỉ có 42,7% các em xác định rõ ràng lý tưởng, hoài bão lập thân, lập nghiệp. Nguyên nhân của vấn đề này nằm ở lối sống thực dụng, thiếu hiểu biết nền tảng, thiếu khả năng thấu hiểu và hợp tác.
Từ những nghiên cứu trên, chúng tôi đi đến kết luận quan trọng: Muốn giáo dục đạo đức, trước hết phải cho các em nhận thức được hai giá trị cốt lõi là đạo lý dân tộc và ý thức công dân. Đạo lý dân tộc là những lý lẽ mang tính phổ quát mà con người cần phải tuân thủ. Ý thức công dân là việc hiểu được quyền và nghĩa vụ của bản thân, từ đó mới hình thành trách nhiệm với cộng đồng.

Giáo dục vốn dĩ gồm ba bộ phận là gia đình, nhà trường và xã hội. Lâu nay như một thói quen, chúng ta thường phó mặc tất cả cho nhà trường, bởi cha mẹ chỉ quan tâm làm sao cho con ăn ngon, mặc đẹp mà không quan tâm đến môi trường xã hội có tốt lên hay không. Muốn như vậy, họ phải dũng cảm hợp tác với người khác. Muốn mình không cảm thấy bất an và tự tin hơn trong việc nuôi dạy con thì chỉ có cách học hỏi và tự suy nghiệm, tham gia vào các hoạt động xã hội.
Ở Nhật, họ có lớp dạy cách làm bố mẹ như thế nào, từ cách tắm cho con đến chăm sóc con ra sao, có cả nhân viên hướng dẫn gia đình về tầm quan trọng của việc đọc sách đối với trẻ dưới 6 tuổi, về cách đọc sách, đọc ở đâu, sau đó, họ còn tặng một quyển sách cho trẻ. Quyển sách này rất đơn giản, chỉ hơn 20 trang. Mỗi trang họ ghi một sự vật trong thiên nhiên, ví dụ âm thanh tiếng lá rơi, tiếng nước chảy, ô tô chạy ra sao…Nấc thang 6 tuổi đã định hình nền tảng nhân cách cho một đứa trẻ. Vì thế, cha mẹ phải chuẩn bị cho quá trình dạy dỗ từ trước.
Mục tiêu xã hội của giáo dục là tạo ra những người công dân có trách nhiệm. Việc giáo dục con người trở thành công dân có trách nhiệm sẽ ảnh hưởng lớn đến tương lai sau này của gia đình, cộng đồng và đất nước.
Thực tế, có những người tuyệt vời trong không gian gia đình, không gian thuộc về họ, còn trong không gian xã hội họ là một người công dân tồi, vì cảm quan công dân của họ rất thấp. Cảm quan ở đây chính là một thói quen trong vô thức dẫn dắt con người hành động. Giáo dục ý thức công dân chính là việc nâng cao cảm quan công dân.
Vấn đề giáo dục công dân hay nâng cao cảm quan công dân nếu chỉ nhìn nhận một cách máy móc thì người ta thường nghĩ nó là một sự thuyết giáo. Khi viết sách về giáo dục công dân, chúng ta cần chú ý xây dựng mục tiêu rất chính xác, chân lý rất phổ quát, lời khuyên đọc là hiểu ngay, không dài dòng văn tự, giống như giáo pháp “trực chỉ nhân tâm” của nhà Phật.
Cách giảng dạy cũng phải chuyển tải những khái niệm căn bản như thế nào là trung thực, công bằng, trách nhiệm với cộng đồng – quốc gia… Đó là những vấn đề tồn tại chung của một đất nước văn minh mà một công dân có ý thức cần quan tâm sâu sắc. Khi có trách nhiệm công dân thì dù ở môi trường nào, cương vị nào, người ta đều cân nhắc đến lợi ích của cộng đồng.
Ở một bình diện khác, giáo dục đạo đức cần phải thay đổi theo hướng tăng cường tổ chức cho học sinh học tập trải nghiệm. Nhà trường nên dành nhiều thời gian cho hoạt động ngoại khóa, hướng các em đến những địa chỉ như thăm trường tình thương, giúp đỡ trại mồ côi, người khuyết tật…để khơi dậy lòng nhân ái, góp phần thay đổi nhận thức, tư tưởng, tình cảm.
Giáo dục đạo đức nên tiến hành từ bậc mẫu giáo, tùy theo trình độ của các cấp học mà áp dụng hình thức, phương pháp, nội dung phù hợp. Quan trọng là chúng ta giúp các em hiểu biết lý lẽ về đạo đức, những lễ nghi phép tắc thường ngày và nguyên tắc ứng xử trong cộng đồng, sau đó hướng hành vi của các em theo những chuẩn mực trên.
Nên lưu ý rằng vai trò làm gương của người lớn (bố mẹ, thầy cô…) rất quan trọng trong việc thuyết phục các em. Bên cạnh đó, chương trình giáo dục đạo đức cần được thiết kế theo nội dung từ gần gũi đến sâu xa, bắt đầu từ việc nuôi dưỡng tình yêu lao động, yêu con người đến yêu thương đồng bào, yêu đất nước…
Việc tạo dựng yếu tố văn hóa trong trường học sẽ góp phần làm cho môi trường giáo dục trở nên lành mạnh. Tất cả giáo viên, học sinh, công nhân viên đều phải học cách cư xử đúng mực, hình thành lối sống trung thực, không chạy theo thành tích…
Để giáo dục đạo đức được tiến hành hiệu quả và thực chất, cần áp dụng phương pháp sư phạm tối ưu nhất, dựa trên nguyên tắc tạo ra sự vui vẻ và thoải mái. Đó chính là phương pháp lấy người học làm trung tâm, khuyến khích sự tham gia tích cực của họ vào các hoạt động. Nếu giáo viên giảng dạy đạo đức bằng phương pháp thuyết trình, truyền đạt lý thuyết thì không bao giờ đạt kết quả. Học sinh cần phải nhìn thấy những biểu hiện cụ thể của hành vi đạo đức, có khi đó chỉ là một hành động nhỏ của bác bảo vệ trong sân trường.
Muốn dạy cho học sinh sự tôn trọng thì giáo viên phải biết tôn trọng người khác, đặc biệt là tôn trọng cả những học sinh cá biệt nhất. Trước đây, có hiện tượng giáo viên dùng phấn ném vào học sinh khi các em lơ là hoặc không giữ gìn trật tự lớp học. Hành động này tuy rất nhỏ nhưng tôi kịch liệt phản đối vì làm như thế là phản giáo dục, ảnh hưởng không chỉ đến một em mà còn cả không khí lớp học. Các em học sinh ở bất kỳ cấp học nào cũng cần nhận được sự tôn trọng như nhau.
Khi nói đến nguyên tắc tạo ra sự vui vẻ, chúng ta nên nhìn nhận lại về vai trò và cách thức tổ chức buổi sinh hoạt đầu tuần. Tôi hay đi tham vấn tâm lý học đường và chứng kiến ở rất nhiều trường học, buổi sinh hoạt dưới cờ trở thành giờ phút căng thẳng nhất. Tổng phụ trách hay hiệu trưởng thường lớn tiếng trên loa phóng thanh, câu chuyện kỷ luật và thi đua thành tích được đem ra nói mãi. Đặc biệt, việc bêu tên học sinh dưới cờ, theo tôi là không nên chút nào. Trẻ em rất nhạy cảm, dễ xấu hổ và tự ti, hành động này càng khiến các em phản kháng bằng cách ương bướng hơn.
Sửa lỗi cho học sinh thì phải sửa một cách riêng tư, tế nhị. Giáo dục đạo đức không đồng nghĩa với trừng phạt, thầy cô nên xem các em học sinh là đối tượng cần được giúp đỡ để trở nên tốt hơn.

Khảo sát chương trình giáo dục đạo đức của nhiều nước phát triển ở phương Đông cũng như phương Tây, người viết đúc kết được nhiều kinh nghiệm hữu ích. Nay xin khái quát ba nước điển hình là Nhật Bản, Hàn Quốc và Mỹ, như một tham khảo quý giá cho các phụ huynh và các nhà sư phạm.
Ở Nhật Bản, giáo dục đạo đức là môn học độc lập, có mục tiêu rõ ràng: nuôi dưỡng tâm hồn, tôn trọng phẩm giá con người, nỗ lực kế thừa và phát triển văn hóa truyền thống, làm phong phú văn hóa cá nhân. Công dân Nhật Bản được giáo dục để trở thành người có thể ra quyết định độc lập, ủng hộ sự phát triển xã hội và nhà nước dân chủ.
Còn tại Hàn Quốc, chương trình giáo dục đạo đức chiếm thời lượng đáng kể trong hệ thống giáo dục. Mỗi tuần có 2 tiết giáo dục đạo đức, xuyên suốt 12 năm học. Bên ngoài nhà trường, đạo đức là vấn đề cần phải kiểm tra khi tuyển dụng lao động. Các nhà tuyển dụng yêu cầu nhân viên phải nắm vững lý thuyết đạo đức căn bản, có hệ giá trị riêng và tính cách hòa hợp. Chương trình giáo dục đạo đức hướng đến mục tiêu quốc gia là sự thống nhất và thịnh vượng của Hàn Quốc.
Đối với Mỹ, giáo dục đạo đức chú trọng vào việc bồi dưỡng đức tính công dân như sự chính trực, lòng can đảm, tinh thần trách nhiệm, sự tôn trọng nhân phẩm của tất cả mọi người. Giáo dục đạo đức còn khơi dậy lòng tự trọng, ý thức phục vụ cộng đồng, hướng tới mục tiêu đa văn hóa. Người Mỹ nói rằng giáo dục đạo đức “hun đúc trái tim, trí tuệ và bàn tay của những đứa trẻ”, giúp cho chúng hiểu biết, yêu thương và thực hiện điều tốt.
